Depends on what Im going to use the car for. I would not even consider a Roush, I cant stand the front end, Shelby would make a good driver as parts would be reasonably easy to get, Saleen would be a going to a show, only when i know the road is going to be empty car as parts can be tricky to track down.
For the money id probably buy a c7 zo6 or some land.

Anything north of the standard optioned GT has always been wasted on the guy the really would drive it for its' intended purpose.
Which one of you in your late 20's to 40 has the disposable income to either make a 700.00+ a month payment, or come off of 50+ grand to drive a factory built race car.........................

Nobody????

Like I thought.

Just like a Z06 Corvette. Who is driving the car when you look over?

Some crusty old raisin that thinks I give a s hit when he brings it to a cruise night, or some hag smokin' a cigarette with the windows rolled up flying down the interstate late for her sales call.

Shelby, Saleen, Roush, COPO, Z-28, Z06, ZL-1 are all names/numbers that were never intended for someone w/ kids, a mortgage, and an hourly wage.

Uh, there are younger folks who have done well for themselves who can afford a car like that on top of a family, mortgage, etc. Not the typical person, sure, but that wasn't your argument either.

I'm NOT a millionaire, and in about February of 08 I allllmost pulled the trigger on a brand new GT 500. I've loved Shelby since I was a kid in the 80's. I spent hours drooling over 60's Shelbys in magazines. What kept me from doing it was I'd just purchased a new truck and I would have had to sell it at a loss. The payment would've been the same and I would've bought an old truck for hauling/towing... I just couldn't justify losing on a trade in. Fortunately, the bug passed. A co-worker of mine has a 2010 and it is nice. I have to avoid it like the plague to avoid the "wants" though.

If you don't mind me asking, what would the "payment" have been?

Back in the Fox's hey day to me there was nothing like a Saleen. My neighbor had a black '86 Saleen. Super clean. It wasn't much quicker than my '85GT but the stance on that car was absolutely perfect.

Nowadays, out of those three I'd choose Shelby but in reality I'd gladly settle for a Boss 302. Don't even need a Laguna Seca. Just a regular Boss and I'm good.

Well I'm 48, married, kids blah blah, I've had Mustangs since I was 17, finally worked my way up to the Shelby, after trading in my 12 Boss 302.
Main reason is for the ease of upgrade hp. But, then again, I gotta say the Boss 302 444 hp was perfect for the street, the Shelbys raw torque is too much for spirited driving on the roads.

Not a reasonable assumption. I think you're not used to hanging out with the crowd of guys that can afford it. There are a lot, A LOT, of people out there that this is chump change to. The problem is that anyone who answers this becomes and instant douche-bag. I guess I'm a douche-bag. The money is there... the priorities are elsewhere. I'll probably still end up dropping another 20+ in my fox through the years, though. But then again I don't have kids or a wife to support, or a mortgage, and I've always lived well below my means and even had several deployments where I didn't spend more than a grand all year long. I can say that just about any single Captain could do it and they probably could on top of supporting a family.

As for me, I liken it to the guy/girl that gets all gaah-gaah over a celebrity.

They're just people, that happen to make 60 million dollars over the course of the summer.

So what?
The average hourly wage a-hole has to decide if he wants to make payments or repairs. Keep fixing my old piece of sht or make payments on a new car that will be a piece of sht in 3 years and have 3 more years left to pay. It's a no win unless you're a young person who's "done good in life." Ie: A fresh out of college oilfield engineer who may or may not be facing a layoff.

A good modern car will last literally a lifetime unless you buy some POC buick or bottom end GM etc.
What kinda car last three years? those were our parents 70k mile built in obsolescence big 3 cars.

I think cars like, Shelby, Roush, BMW, Corvette, Porsche and allot of Japanese are a longtime thing,

Buy parts and turn wrenches or get something off the lot.... in the end it'll cost similar

What do you think some of these guys have in their 80's 15k new foxes.....now

I don't get it car guys diss'n nice cars, huh?

Gee,...I'm not used to replying to comments I made over 6 months ago.....but since you have, I will.

I agree with you that I was short sighted in my thought process when I claimed that that there was a small segment of people either capable and willing to make the payment, or could readily just plop down the 50+ large to buy themselves a track ready Mustang w/ a special name plate.

That's because I was too narrow minded when I made that statement based on my "who's at the Saturday night cruise-in" census poll.

While there may have been 1-5 of the these cars there on any given Saturday night out of the 150 in attendance, I didn't consider the couple of Cobra kit cars, the myriad of high dollar street rods/muscle cars, the 3-4 Corvettes, the 6 or so SRT-8's sitting by themselves, or any of the other fools that have dumped a stupid amount of money into something the likes of a turbocharged, injected, roller cammed I6 in a Fairmont.
So I'll humbly admit that I spoke,..............un-wisely.

I still maintain that the "built-in" capabilities of a Shelby GT 500 or Boss 302 Laguna Seca is a waste on the 90% on those that are capable of buying it.

Depending on your driving, and investment in traction, I would have to say the powerful cars all depend on the driver's behind the wheel. I wrecked my GT, and its mods cant amount to more than 400 hp at the wheels. Does that mean I cant handle it, or its too much HP for the street? I would say no. Did I make a poor choice and take it out in the rain with street radials, why yes I did. Ask the average guy in a GT500 if he thinks hwy pulls from 3rd gear are a "waste" of the HP his car has... Its perfectly streetable, if you dont get caught.

PFFFFTTT!! Is 550 WHP more "streetable" than 380?
The only difference between you hitting the curb w/ your GT, or a Shelby GT 500, is that with the latter, it woulda happened on dry pavement just as easily as it did for you in the rain.

We ( and I mean this in the most broadest of terms) are NOT the typical customer that buys one.
Which means that some of "us" are.
After thinking about it, I really would like to see the majority demographic of the typical Badged Mustang buyer. (AKA Shelby, Saleen, Roush, Boss302) I'd bet by far and large, 80% of the cars purchased by that demo has never had the back of the go pedal ever get close enough to the carpet to be considered W.O.T..
That means out of 50,000 units sold 10,000 drive it with some semblance of the intended performance potential, which leaves about 40,000 posers driving their cabriolets w/ the top down so we can see their pretentious hats.
( Logo'd C/S worn backwards of course.)

Even the capabilities of a properly equipped new Mustang goes beyond what most of the owners will EVER ask of that car, .....add 100+ HP to the mix, and you get a 57,000 (or whatever the fk they cost) "look what I got" to drive to the mall.
So you paid and extra 20k for the power most will never use, a stripe, and a badge for what?

To accelerate in 3rd gear on the interstate?

Waste.
