(Sorry, i meant to write carbed not carved) Last week I was coming home and when I downshifted the car backfired and died. I found a broken magnet in the mallory mechanical advance distributor. I installed a brand new same model distributor and the car fired right up and seemed to idle fine. I took it for a spin and the car is sputtering and popping like crazy and I can't figure it out. I have msd ignition, holley mechanical fuel pump, and a summit 600cfm carb. I recently installed an electric fan at the same time as distributor. Here is what I have tried:
1. Checked timing
2. Changed plugs/wires
3. Tried spare coil
4. Triple checked firing order
5.Cleaned all fuel lines from tank to carb with compressed air.
6. Have 5-5.5 psi at carb
7. Bypassed fuel pressure regulator
8. Tried spare fuel pump
9. Checked float level
10. Cleaned carb and jets

Im down in myrtle beach for mustang week and I'm stuck trying to figure this out. Any useful advise wiuld be really appreciated!

Bypass the MSD box and see what happens. MSD means " May Suddenly Die"
I would except that is my only means of ignition. My distributor needs as box to run. MSD told me it would either work or not work and the 6al wouldn't cause sputtering, it just wouldnt run at all.

If you click on thread tools on the top of your post you can edit the title of this thread. Best of luck with the car down at Mustang Week!

Note the ballast resistor shown in the diagram: you’ll need that too

See http://webpages.charter.net/1bad6t/duraspark.html for more help.

I dont have the duraspark setup. I only have the msd 6a, blaster 2 coil, and a Mallory mechanical advance distributor. My car was originally a 4 cylinder so none of the old ignition components were used.

Rotsa Ruck said the little Chinese man...

One more reason I would never buy someone's carb conversion. You now have no simple way to troubleshoot ignition problems.
Hopefully someone else has some better ideas...

Alternative to DuraSpark and may be the cheap solution to replace/bypass the MSD box

See [urlhttp://www.junkyardgenius.com/jeep/cj503.html[/url] for how to use a GM-HEI module instead of a DuraSpark box. It is supposed to be less than $30 at the auto parts chain stores like AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts.

I tried another carb, no luck I just ordered a different distributor overnight from summit. hopefully I can figure this out in time to at least use my car once for mustang week. I will also try bypassing msd or get another box. I dont see any speed shops in myrtle beach

It was the dam distributor! Dont order summit brand distributors, even though they say Mallory makes them but my first one didn't last a year and the second one never worked at all. I put an MSD one in this time.

You must like pain... May Suddenly Die will surely rise up and bite you in the wallet at the worst time...
