My tuner (Steve Lee @ ThunderAutosports) gave me a call today. Now this is through the stock AOD, with the stock VB and converter still. Seems the silverfox VB I bought off a guy on the Corral needs to be repaired- the manual valve body piston is sticking in the bore when torqued down- could be to much epoxy or a bad piston. Sending it back to Dan and he will look at it for me.

With the new top end- AFR 165 heads, TFS1cam, 1.6 Ford rockers, 30lb injectors and PRO M MAF- using my existing Explorer intake, 70mm TB, FMS shorty headers. Without any tune other than bumping up the timing and playing with the fuel pressure a little.

279rwhp
304rwtq

Afain, this is through a bone stock AOD, which is sucking about 25% of the hp from the flywheel, so we are at around 350 flywheel hp. If I had a stick, we would be right around the 300rwhp mark. I'm sure with a chip we can pick up some additional hp. I'm picking the car up tomorrow so I will report on the drive home.

Once I get the VB back from Dan, this car should run nicely for an AOD vert. I'm hoping for high 12's or low 13's before they boot me for no roll cage.

Sounds good, yeah I bought a vert and didn't realize that the rules were that strict.. Kinda sucks you need a 6pt bar, fire jacket, and 5 pt harness for a 13.49.. Just one reason I'm selling mine

You don't need a shift kit and valve body, it's either or. The shift kit allows the stock body to have firmer shifts, while the aftermarket valve body can do that but can be customized to your specific car. Along with that you should look to replace the shift governors OD band and drum and the servo from the stock B unit to the hd A unit. The stock 2 piece input shaft is aweak spot that can be replaced with a 1 piece.

It does help IMO to get a higher stall converter if you increase the hp substantially, as it will allow the converter to flash at a higher rpm range, allowing more hp to be transimitted to the rear..

I believe the correct term is "Trans pak." A Trans Pak improves all the shifts, the "shift kit" only improves a 1/2 shift or something like that.

Once you get the tranny dialed in you should consider adding a blower. I got a friend that once owned a vert with AOD, a Vortech, Edelbrock heads, Systemax and cam. Can't remember what cam it was. It made right around 425rwhp. It was quite a handful and I was impressed.
The cool thing about the automatic you never have to lift to shift. It stays in boost.
Stick your foot in it and hang on! LOL

I had fun riding with him in that car!

hehe.. why do you think I went right to 30lb injectors and MAF? The only thing is I kept the explorer manifold- even though it is ported. I'm not in the mood to go swapping out intakes again soon. If I do get a vortech, I'm leaning towards the new models that are self oiled. Seems all you do is hang the brackets and tensioner, move the alternator down below, replace the crank pulley, install the intake tube, install the head unit and get a tune.

Need to let the bank account and wifey recover from the recent head swap and valve body, trans cooler. Probably spent over $2000. Also spent about $750 on springs, shocks, control, arms, etc. Then add the $700 for the new top.

Very leery on buying a used blower unless i can see it. New we are talking almost another $3k

Then... I'm sure I will blow up the AOD and need a new converter, input shaft, servo, OD drum and bands.. There goes another $1500.

Need to deal with a slight surging idle/bucking . Wondering if the EEC needs to adapt a little to the new setup.

JESUS these damn cars are money pits.
