I'm in the market for a new ignition system. I have done a little research and came up with the msd 6 + digital box. I am installing this on a 90 mustang with H/C/I with a V3 Si Supercharger. Is their a better system for a 400+ hp ??? street car? I see that the 6+ has a 1 step with rev limit and a few other options which are cool.. but should I look at others?

There are better systems, but not necessarily for the money. I have a Digital 6, which was prone to failure, but has been good to me. I think the best for the money is still the Crane Hi-6. If I was in the market for a new one, that's what I would get.

A Crane HI-6 is not equivalent to Digital 6 plus unless you look at the HI- 6TRC. Even then, you still gotta buy the timing retard module as an "option". Only then will you get the same feature compliment that comes on a 6 plus. It always kills me when people dog a MSD box. Crane wishes they had a fraction of the business MSD has. Crane make cams, MSD makes ignitions. Maybe if there were as many Crane's, Mallory's, Pertronix's and who knows what Chinee brand out there to compare apples to apples, then maybe it'd be fair to say that MSD May Suddenly Die.. When there is one Crane at the track, and 100 MSD's, the one guy that's gonna b itch is one of the 100 who had a MSD go bad on him.

The other 99 never make a sound.

My last two street/race cars from the early 2000's had Digital 6 plus's in them,..they worked perfectly.

Bravo, bravo. Math:thinking:

You have a valid point, but just about everything MSD makes has problems. After 16 years, they have probably worked out the problems with the Digital 6. I would say the best advice is to mount whatever igniton box you get inside the cabin of the car, and not under the hood. High underhood temps is what gets most of them. The Hi-6 is known for being reliable, and you might not need all the features of a Digital 6+ anyway. I can tell you hands down that the Crane ignition coils are more reliable than the MSD ones. They used to sell more Crane coils than MSD ones. I ended up with the MSD box. When I was originally trying to buy a Hi-6 in 1997, they were so damn popular everyone was sold out. The box was literally on a 3 month back order. I happened into Horsepower Sales in Pompano Beach, and the owner had just received the first shipment of Digital 6s. He talked me into buying one. I may have been the first person to ever buy a Digital 6, if not the first certainly one of the first 20. The first 3 failed in quick succession, but I was able to get them all warranty exchanged without much problem. I'm on my 4th one now, and I've had it more than 10 years. I'm on my 2nd Crane PS91 coil in that same period of time.

I honestly don't know much about carb distributor setups. For the love of God, don't buy an MSD distributor. I know everyone dogs on Accel brand, but it's actually my preferred brand. I would try and find a good Accel distributor. The Mallory unilite series has as many problems as the MSD. An electronic igniton box does more for a carb car than a fuel injection. In a fuel injected car the computer can adjust the timing electronically. Not so on a carb car. When you see guys at the track (or on Street Outlaws) with a laptop tuning a carb car, that's what they are adjusting. Most of those really fast carb cars have an MSD Digital 7 or equivalent box that has a huge range of adjustments on it. The user can measure the EGT on each cylinder and adjust timing on each cylinder individually. It can adjust for launch, it can limit the power for a short period of time on launch on a small tire car to keep from spinning the tires a lot, etc. Even the basic Digital 6 has a good number of adjustments to make a carb car run better.

Thanks for the response I'll def. keep this in mind whenever my MSD goes out. As my Ignition box is in the cabin with me I'm sure it will stick around for a while. Never knew about the adjustments you could make to the box with a computer... hmmm.

The Digital 7 and up (i.e. 7531) are those that are laptop programmable.
