Another Clutch Question...

Hey everybody, thanks in advance for your input.

I just had installed a RAM HDX clutch with a new RAM billet steel flywheel on my '01 Bullitt. I've been driving it about a week and taking it easy to break it in right. Besides the stiff pedal feel, I was surprised how close to the top of the pedal I was before the clutch engaged. Almost stalling one time using reverse. I have also noticed chatter mostly at lower RPM's. Is the clutch engagement point and chatter going to improve once broken in? It's a Stage 1 clutch kit and just a step up above OE. My car's putting out about 325HP. Need more horses?

Thanks again.

Make sure the preload on your clutch cable is correct and that you are using an OEM cable. If you had a shop do the install they might have gotten the cable too tight. If you have a multi-hook quadrant that can also change the engagement point as far as where your foot placement is. I just did an Exedy Mach 400 clutch on the 16th and it starts to engage almost immediately after my foot comes off the floor. I run an OEM cable, with a Max Motorsports quadrant and have the preload set correctly with a fiore microclick firewall adjuster.

The stock clutch quadrants are said to be weak units. Perhaps the quadrant is the issue. As silversmith82 mentioned, it could just need adjustment. The easiest way to do this if you have a stock quadrant is to simply pull up on the pedal. It has a self adjusting mechanism that should click when taking the slack out of the cable. If the cable is adjusted manually and is too tight, you will notice as the clutch will not fully engage.
