My 87 Gt Convertible Feels Faster Than My 94 Gt Coupe (stock)

I am having a hard time understanding how my 87 convertible feels faster (stronger) than my 94 GT did when it was stock. The 87 is a 5 speed with 2.73 gears. The 94 was the same. Maybe its just me but it feels stronger...

Being an '87 its probably Speed Density. Stock for stock speed density is faster than MAF. And, the 87 is slightly lighter than the '94.
I bought my '88 vert new. It was Speed Density with 2.73 gears. I won alot of races back in the day.

Yes it is speed density. I always assumed that they were all rated the same and performed the same. I also figured that the fox being a convertible would end up weighing as much as the sn95 model.

87-88 speed density cars always felt the strongest. After that, small changes in the cam, computer programming, etc reduced HP slightly but was never reflected.

94-95's typically weren't the strongest 5.0's either.

Last night when I was driving it around, I thought to myself.. This thing feels like it has something done to it, but what?? It has stock 2.25 exhaust and headers on it. I know the intake is stock. I know it is stock by the way it idles. Chances are they are still E7's. I know it has tall gears by the way the rpm's are at 55 mph. I am impressed by how strong it feels taking off. My 94 would seldom break the tires loose at 3500 when stomping on it. This 87, you can take off nice and easy and mash the throttle and hear the tires letting go at 3500. It is impressive.

I'm seriously considering on purchasing a gt40p long block for $200 and putting the heads and intake on it.

If you do be prepared for a maf swap. If you can score the gt40 parts cheap it's a great bump in performance. I have no complaints. I can bark my 315's ask the way through third gear.

Last year I completely lost my mind and did a HCI swap and added the blower on my '88 vert.
Before that over years I had tinkered and tweaked the engine to making pretty decent power with the stock heads, cam, and bottom end and Speed Density.
Here's what I had going on:
I added an Explorer upper/lower intake with 1/2" spacer, Ford Racing 65mm TB ,March Perf Ram air intake and underdrive pulleys, electric fan, FRPP ceramic coated shorties, Catted Bassani x pipe, 2 chamber Flowmaster cat back. I also had FRPP aluminum drive shaft,3.73 gears, 14 degrees timing.
The car made 240rwhp, 299rwtq on a Dynojet. That was with all emissions in place and speed density.
Really felt like a rocket!
Good Luck, I hope this info helps you with your future upgrade plans.

Thanks guys for you help. With my last Mustang, I went big. I went with a 351w and it ran great! I believe I will concentrate on making more power with less this time around. I definitely want to do the fan & alternator upgrade along with some good exhaust. After that, I want to do a HCI swap. Am I able to go with the Explorer alternator? If so, I can use that when I buy a long block.

Sorry I am late to the thread. You can find out which is faster and by how much without a track. iPhones and androids have performance apps for free or little that should be helpful without causing too much mahem.
