Head Gasket Choices

No need to pull the motor to install heads with studs. Even if it was tight, you could install the heads on the block without the studs and then screw the studs in the same manner as regular bolts. It's not even close to being an issue though.

Is it worth the extra 75$ for studs? Any recommendations on where to get them?

If you plan on pulling the heads often and/or planning on a power adder, then yes get the studs. I went with ARP bolts as my build is around 300rwhp n/a and the bolts have always been worry free for me. Either way you will be fine IMO.

Summit was having a black friday 10% off sale. If not, check with LMRS or AM for prices, as they give Stangnet members a discount.

Depending on the head you use, you may need either 1/2 inch size bolts/studs or the step washers if using 7/16 size .

You say if I plan to swap heads often to get studs.. Does that mean you can use them more than once? I have a set of bolts laying here that I used for less than 5k miles. I thought they were junk after you used them

I've read that ARP bolts
both can, and cannot be reused. I can tell you that I have reused them without problems on a mild 300rwhp build. If you are going turbo, studs would be a good idea. I know you probably need them NOW, but I bought mine new/used from corral for $100.

This isn't a rush, slowly over the winter I am going to work on it. I have a 3 year old and a 2 month old that I spend 99% of my free time with. My 3 year old thinks it is fun to go through my toolbox and move stuff from one drawer to another so I can't find it later. So that makes it hard to take him to the garage with me

I have a set of arp bolts I used once for a short period of time. Is it just an overall length measurement, that I could measure with a precision measuring device? I have access to all kinds of measuring devices at work. Benefits of being a tool and die maker.

Might get flamed for this, but I've never heard anything bad about eBay head studs. Many people with turbo LS engines with well over 500 hp using them w/o issue. I think I paid $80 for mine when I bought them earlier this year.

Man does this sound familiar!
