Where To Start? Fuel Smell, pegged Gas Guage,or...?

I am new here, so have tried to find as much as possible by reading and searching through the forums but unfortunately still need a bit of Stanguruisms... Bought this ol' 98 V6 at a good price and have a laundry list of things to repair. Troubleshooting includes the pegged fuel guage (I did read a thread speaking about resistors but was hoping there was an easier way to find out), I am smelling fuel when driving and the grommet is in good shape and dry. I can replace the fender and turn signal fine, but the passenger window (motor runs just no movement) is another story. Both door panels and window switches I can figure out as I go along I think. I had Tire Barn (hope I didnt break a rule by stating their name) Install a new set of Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires and drill out the rivets and allign the front end. They stated that all is good underneath but I can hear a rattle when crossing bumpy terrain. I am hoping that y'alls experiences can direct me to the most obvious solutions first if possible. I work in a foundry and am mechanically inclined, just never owned anything nearly this new before. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to forum!
I would drop the tank and check the gasket around the fuel pump/fuel sender assembly. You are gonna end up pulling it anyway if it turns out to be a stuck float. The rattling may be from loose trans cross member bolts or trans mount bolts, it could also be worn out suspension bushings, or loose shocks/struts.

Best of luck with your ol' new stang!

The rattle can be your cattalic converter they get lose from the inside and pop and the Bounce around all on the inside happened to mine if u get under it and tap them with your fist and hear it rattle then gotta replace. The fuel gauge pegged could indicate a bad fuel pump which can also mean why you would smell gas so I would look into that if your window motors run but the windows don't move then you most likely have bad window regulators and the only way to fix is to replace as the use a cable a pullie system and if you hear the motor running and the window is not moving most likely the cable broke and can no longer move he pullies to make windows move and there is not fix but to replace that's my 2 cents
