So why aren't there are CVT trannies for sport/muscle cars?

FWIW, I've heard they have a HORRIBLE reliability record with Mini Coopers and Saturns.

The rubber bands are not strong enough yet for the cost/weight. You need a lawnmower size motor or a big hydrostatic set up. Otherwise the new pic em up trucks would have them instead of eight speed auto transmissions.

The technology might be like direct fuel injection for gas motors. It took forever for them to bring it to market, where diesel has done it mechanically nearly forever. (Long, long before computers)
