289 Build Problems

Hey everyone, I'm building a 289 I got as a short block with the crank out. Guy thought he spun a bearing so he took it apart. I had the crank polished and ordered the same rod and main bearings he had in the motor. He had the rod caps on the rods but the bearings were out. I kept everything in order when putting new bearings in. Now the crank won't spin, at all. I loosened all the mains and rods, still stuck. I've concluded that rod caps must have gotten mixed up because with the nuts off them they are stuck in between the crank weights. So any idea on how to get the caps on the right rods?

The rods and caps are usually stamped on the sides where the come together with the cylinder number ,some times they are hard to read . Numbers always point to the out side of the block on each side . Getting the caps back off with out ruining something may be tough if they are wedged .Maybe a large pair of channel locks and gently rock and pull at the same time on the caps. Inside the rod and cap you will see a notch, the bearing locks into ,they must line up when the cap is on the rod .the closest cylinder to the front is number one and that same side will be 1 through 4 .The other side starting from the front will be 5 through 8 .

If they are not marked then youll have to take them out and check them with a bore gauge individually till you can match them up. one thing to check though, there is a chamfer on your rods and caps that need to face the weights (or radius on the crank), if not it will lock everything up when you tighten everything down.
 
Thanks for the help guys, took it apart today and found that some of the caps were on backwards. I ordered a new set of rod bearings from summit since they aren't too expensive. Going to hopefully put it together tomorrow and see what happens.
 
Ok so started putting it together again, made it to the last 2 cylinders. Number 4's rod cap got screwed up at some point either going on or coming off. There's a lump next to the threaded hole on the cap. So I'm assuming I have to replace the rod, is this correct? And if so can I just get a replacement and mill it to the same thickness at the crank end as the old one?
 
Ok so here it is, had already tried to file it but I'm sure if I kept going I would break through into the hole. So where should I go from here?
