New Shoes!

Well, my 5 lug swap got postponed by family stuff. resumed this weekend. Got the front finished, and the rear almost when I realized the axles I had were indeed NOT ranger axles, but SN axles. wheel sits almost an inch out of the wheel well.. ugh. So, it all comes back out and I had to order- sooner than I anticipated- the fox length Moser axles. Yuck. Was hoping to put if off. What a fustercluck.

Ignore the ridiculous mess.. the feverish stretch to complete the job has left the place a shambles.. you can see here the axle length that needs correction. Hopefully Tuesday parts will arrive.

Well to start out with I'm going to just use ranger axles in my 8.8 with a 3.27 gear. I'm going to try to avoid breaking them until I can get some moser or strange 28 splines. Not doing drag radial launches so hoping it'll be ok.
If you keep them spinning you will be fine. Like you said no 5k launches at the track. I have seen stock axles take serious abuse, I wasn't that lucky though, 1 -4k launch on nitto 555r's and snap... Now I'm gun shy... Lol

Ahhh the frustration of vehicle modifications. You get so excited to see the end result but only to have that satisfaction postponed to another day. Sorry bro.

Eh, it'll come around eventually. The turbo is actually finally on the way too, so that's a plus also. My son is chomping at the bit to get back to work on his car, so I'll probably be patching floor pans and doing body work on his fox until my parts come in. Always work to do, never enough time to do it all..

I've been thinking about starting a build thread for his car, but it's so rough it's not really camera friendly yet..LOL.

It's all about the progress, not how pretty is it. Seeing how rough it is now is great for the beginning of a build thread so by the end we have a comparison to how great it looks & performs when finished. The journey has already begun, get that thread going NOW so we can ride along with you.

Well.. it still looks like something a cat threw up, despite all the work done to it. It used to look like something found at the bottom of a river, now it's just junk.. but it's my son's first fox and he loves it. Shouldn't have been saved, but there was no convincing him. I will dig around and try to find some of the progress pics from when we started, although most were lost with my old phone..

@hoopty5.0 has seen it.. his first reaction was "Oh, my..." LOL.. I don't think it'll ever be a beauty.

How old is your Son? Who's funding it? Sounds like there's better starting point for building a Fox but he'll have to walk that mile himself to figure it out. Even a fox that's already running and driveable takes a chit ton of work, time and $ to make nice again and add HP.

Are you thinking about a build thread just for your sons project or for you car too?

Well, my son is 15 and turns 16 in June. The build thread would be for his car, if any..

It's a funny story. I had a sweet straight reef blue roller I was going to build.. a 93 LX hatch. I had a 351W I was going to stroke and install into it, then I spotted my green car on corral and had to have it. SO, I flew to NC , bought it, and drove it home to Texas. This was 2011. I went to put the roller up for sale and my son threw a fit because he wanted it. So I kept it. A few years go by.. he changes his mind, and decides he wants a truck. This is fine with me, as he's less likely as a new driver to get hurt in a truck, so I sell the roller. Perfect clean car. A little more time goes by and he flip flops again. He spies this turd rotting away in a friend of mine's yard and asks about it- as luck would have it, my friend GIVES IT TO HIM.. aaaand he's in love.

EDIT: and, he's actually funding most of it, well part of it. I promised to match him and it's been pretty fair, I think he's a little behind, maybe. He got a lot for Christmas. The way I see it is I could have gotten him a lot better car for money invested, but he now knows brakes, transmission, wiring, engine overhauling, now working on interior, welding, body and paint. 15 years old... priceless.

It's a model of function over form, for sure. But it has come a long way and is truly something to be proud of. I'd have been tickled sh*tless if my dad and I had done something like this.

The car was rough, but I have to say the progress has been truly impressive. Will be a nice car for a 16 yo kid with the horsepower itch.

Ok, here's the latest. The new axles take the larger dia splined shouldered ARP studs, which are longer:

....aaand I had already purchased wheel locks from our friends at Late model resto that look like this:

So, I picked out ten of them, threw them in a lathe, and ta daaaa:

Now, we have a full set that will work. I just need time to put them on the car...
