Hello everyone, I'm new to the stagnet forum.
Anyways, I just bought an 01 mustang GT from the original owner in completely stock unmolested condition. the car is near mint.
Anywho, I decided to change the clutch out with a new one because the old one was very worn.
I accidentally bought the wrong clutch kit at advance auto parts, I'm assuming the one I bought was for the T45 because it was smaller than the one for my car, I have the tremec 3650. I used the throwout bearing from the wrong clutch but didn't realize I bought the wrong clutch until after I already installed the bearing, and I went and swapped out the wrong clutch for the right one, but didn't change the bearing, and when I put the transmission back in, I found out that the car wouldn't shift into any gear with the engine running, but would shift easily through all gears with the engine off,I thought the only thing it could be the throwout bearing being the wrong one for the tremec. are the throwout bearings different on the two transmissions ?

From the factory the 2001 GT came with an 11" clutch. Before that Ford used an 10.5" clutch. Which clutch to use depends upon which flywheel is on YOUR car.

Which friction plate to use needs to match the number of splines on the transmission.

Check out the following link. Note the application compatibility/interchange how LARGE it really is. Bottom line there isn't a difference in the throw out bearing between the two clutches.

It seems to me that you should consider an "installation error" as a possibility.

I don't really know what to think honestly, I called the local Napa and the guy compared the clutch kits for a 2000(T45) and a 2002(tremec) and he said the throwout bearings where different from what he could tell.. the car ran and shifted fine before, I highly doubt it'd be a clutch cable or quadrant or something. More information on the bearings would be nice.

IMO it's short sighted to think that an incorrectly adjusted quadrant couldn't cause similar problems.

Since you seem to doubt the interchange information from the oreillyauto site, why not go to your local auto parts store have have them look up both TOB's and pull them. Compare side by side with your own eyes. Then you will KNOW what's different.

Didn't you actually have both TOB's in your own hands? How were they different?

However if the TOB is not correct for the application or is installed incorrectly it might not make any difference as the "fix" starts out with "remove transmission".

Sounds to me like the clutch is out of adjustment and the TOB is not pressing the pressure plate fingers in far enough to disengage to allow for gear change.

I have found different pressure plate/disc combo's (other than stock) don't usually work with a stock cable/quadrant without at least a firewall adjuster for proper alignment. The best bet is to pick up a Maximum motor sports quadrant, NON adjustable cable and firewall adjuster. Hands down they are the best set up I've ever used or will purchase again. Yes, they cost more but you get what you pay for in quadrants, cables and adjusters.
