Head Gasket Trouble - Pull Engine

  • Sponsors (?)

I'm at work right now. I will post better later tonight but the porting principles is a good article to start with. There are two other articles I read from tmoss websites as well.

I also used a couple other sites that had good pictures. I found some video as well I used as pointers for all the little things you run into you don't expect and are not in documentation just comes from experience. I will post links later.

@stang89bidges where did you find the head porting instructions? I did not see them on EECTuning.org, only intake stuff. Did I overlook something?

Ok, so here is some of the months worth of research I did before I even started porting. And I still dug into the CC's like an inexperienced idot... Just goes to show learning the hard way can sometimes be costly... But hey, sometimes I think I learn more this way...

TMOSS articles
He has a lot of different papers written on different aspects of an engine. A lot of flow data. A lot of material on what and why it works. I recommend reading them all that pertain to your car and what your trying to do. I wanted to understand the whole idea behind the lungs of our cars so I read most of the intake articles along with the head porting articles as well.

I think some of the ones your looking for could be the following:
1. EECTuning.org • View topic - Making Porting Templates
2. EECTuning.org • View topic - Porting Principals Techncial Article

But I recommend reading a lot more. There are some really good articles on the intakes as well that help explain the heads with the intake.

I quickly realized after reading them a couple times over that I almost don't even need to touch my intake because it's going to flow more air than the heads can handle, even after they are ported... But I am still going to touch them up a little. I imagine no 2 heads or intakes are alike.

FordMuscle has a really good article on this procedure along with other great information on rebuilding the stock 5.0. I actually purchased a subscription just to read the articles in full and let me tell you it was worth it for me because I got a lot of information off that site.

@Noobz347 can we add this to tech? good stuff here

I've been reading a lot of these articles today. They're getting E7 heads and stock intakes to flow 200+ cfm which is insane. You could hurt some feelings running around with a "stock" top end.

Brown truck again. Boom.

Got a really cool tool this time

Some of you have been following me for a while and yes I know. This was supposed to be a small budget re-build.... But as I have been doing my research and preparing myself for the reassembly I have reached a crossroad. I had to make a decision.

I'm waiting for my engine to come back from shop. In the mean time I tore off the front accessories of my truck to fix a coolant leak last weekend. I thought it was going to be an easy water pump replacement but of course it went deeper into the timing cover. I'm sure we have all been there.

However I have never done this before and my truck is sporting over 140g on the odometer and the timing chain was crazy loose. After 2 days of research and putting parts on only to have to take them back off and do it again because I forgot something(noob) I finally got her back on the road running better than ever with no leaks.

During all this I had bought a new timing chain with advance/retard built in the crank sprocket. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure all that out, do I advance like the guy in the video told me or should I keep it at zero? Well I kept it at zero because I didn't really know if my stock cam from Chrysler was true zero ground, retarded(probably for economy reasons), or advanced(highly unlikely).

This brings me to my crossroad decision which was to purchase a new degree wheel kit from summit. The Lunati 8001.

I'm going to learn how to use this thing and degree my 302 stock cam before I install my new timing chain. I feel it's the right thing to do as I'm learning timing/synchronizing your cam and crank is very important, especially with a S/C.

Lunati has some pretty good instructions I just hope my service manual has the stock cam specifications in it so I can do this right... Back to research.

Spent the weekend cleaning parts, getting ready for reassembly.

I got these to clean the block with but they also proved helpful on other parts as well. The timing cover was the most time consuming.

And what are these for and are they stock?

Do they simply prevent the oil pan from being damaged by the bolts?
