Distributor Won't Sit Flush

I installed the stock distributor with number 1 piston on TDC and the distributor won't sit flush. There is a small gap, I can fit a flat head screw driver in there. I'm turning the distributor back and forth and at the same time putting a little pressure on the distributor and it won't go in any further. I took out the distributor and there is no crap inside the hole where the shaft goes into. I remove the slight rust around the base and lubed it up with oil and still won't go in all the way to sit flush..Any ideas?

I tried doing that and it didn't work. I also removed the o-ring to see if it will go in flush and it didn't work. After thinking about this, I'm thinking the oil drive shaft might be too long? I'm not using the stock oil drive shaft, I'm using a Melling oil pump and it came with the drive shaft. Before installing it, I did put both side by side and they both were the same length. I remember the collar was different but both were at the same height location.

sometimes it takes more than just a little bit of turning the engine to get the distributor to drop down. the oil pump shaft and distributor shaft dont always cooperate.
