Progress Thread 1980 Mustang Cobra Build

Very cool project. Love the idea of an EFI tunnel ram/clev build:nice:
Thanks!

Your build reminds me of Ron Anderson's pretty ugly 79 mustang. Keep posting updates.
Will do!

I remember an article about that car. Sleeper ugly and packing about 850rwhp:eek:

HOLY CRAP that thing is a beast! You weren't kiddin on the ugly but I still need a moment alone in the bathroom....:fap:

I managed to sand down the center console and spray her for the third time. I like this color better than the two previous forays into color matching. I did find the rear ash tray and painted it as well:

Now I get to wait for the postman to bring me the goods so I can get the console reassembled and scratch another item of the list.

I did also manage to score a hydroboost unit for $35 from a local salvage yard. I will have to shoot some pics later on but at least the braking system is taking form.

Got home from work and found that the postman had left me a present:

NOS latch catch and clips along with an aftermarket armrest pad and coin tray. The black is slightly off from the black I sprayed on the console however I don't think it will bug me too much for now....or I will have that nagging feeling in the back of my brain and won't be able to let it go....I am still waiting on the cover plate for the top of the console but in the mean time I will get the console masked off so I can lay down the chrome for the trim.

Thanks! My first car was an '86 notch. I've always had a love affair with the four eyed stangs and was fortunate to find one of my favorite examples of the breed, so to speak lol.
My second car was an '86 GT. I miss it. Those Recaros are nice! @95steedamustang has quite a few sets of those he has redone. I'm sure he has a few examples he could post.

My uncle has an '86 T-top GT. She's rough but still runs and drives. It was an EFI car that someone "converted" to carb so there are a few issues with it.

I really like the Recaro seats but not so much the upholstery. I think the checkered flag hounds-tooth should've been reserved for the pace car and something different contrived for the Cobras. I have a few ideas on what I want to do with mine but now you have my interest piqued. I will have to shoot 95 a message or search and see if I can find some examples.

I ended up selling my '86 when my Dad decided to give me a sweet deal on his '02 GT which he bought new. Couldn't pass it up; I also couldn't afford two cars at the time, so it had to go. In hindsight, he should have kept his '02 and I should have kept the '86. It ended up going to an owner who treated it right, though.

Here are a couple examples of the Recaros from his build thread.

I know that all too well; I had an 88 GT, 94 Cobra, the 80 Cobra and a 79 F150 all at the same time and couldn't afford them all either. I love hindsight, it always kicks me in the arse lol. Glad the '86 went to a good owner, hopefully you can find another one later on. They seem to pop up quite a bit around here, at least for the time being.

I love the upholstery on the Recaros. I'm wondering how he managed to wrap the headrest with the netting intact?? That's very impressive. I may try to do that myself and see how it goes. Suppose I can't screw it up any worse than the next guy although I haven't sewn anything like that since middle school when we made gym bags...might have to sweet talk my grandma into doing it :D

Haven't had much time to update but I did manage to finish up the console and get my ghetto chrome sprayed on.

Here are a few pics. Found some hobby paint that looks pretty decent and adds a nice accent.

Nice contrast with the black:

It does break up the black nicely. Now I need to get off my arse and rebuild the toploader so I can install this bad boy and try out the armrest lol.

So the next item of business is to decide what to work on next. I'm collecting the parts to finish up the cleveland and also need to pull the car out of storage and fix the radiator support so I can re install the front bumper cover. Hopefully more updates to follow within the month. Stay tuned.

You know I have seen those intakes and try to recommend them to anyone who is looking into fuel injecting their cleveland but me being the masochist that I am decided to take the road less traveled and go with the tunnel ram setup and as fate (or dumb luck) would have it I stumbled across some Dominator throttle bodies that would look great on the Weiand and give it that late sixties trans am look:

Here is a pic of a Weiand tunnel ram with the 4150 adapter removed and vintage Holley 6214 independent runner Dominators attached directly to the lower plenum:

Pretty killer setup

Not to derail @Jredline1984 but I love that Fox/Cobra avitar!!! Very creative!!!

Not derailing at all, I'm just happy to get some peeps to post up :jester: It is a sweet avatar and I wish I could take credit for it but I, uh, "liberated" it from the SVT Performance forum. :D It seemed to fit my project perfectly.
