Fuel Gauge And Sending Unit Issues

Hey guys --

My '70 gas gauge will not read correctly. We have replaced sending units -- 6 of them --- including trying a 1969. When we ground it to see if the gauge is the problem, it works perfectly. We replaced he voltage regulator and that was not it either.

Any ideas?

We are running out of ideas.

The new sender may need to be adjusted .I usually drain the tank to make sure it is empty ,add 1 gallon of gas ,then bent the float rod until it shows empty, that way you have at least 1 gallon at empty .You may have to remove and install it a few times to get it where you want it .
You may have a ground problem at the tank ,there is usually sealer between the tank and the body so the tank only grounds through the mounting screws .Try a better ground source and see if that helps .

I've never personally had to adjust one. They've always been pretty close out of the box but Horse is right about the grounding of your tank. 99 % of problems as you describe are more than likely poor grounding. I've always a separate ground strap from the tank to frame with a lock washer that will dig in when tightened.
