Ignition Lock Cylinder Matching The Door Locks.

Hey guys I am a brand new Mustang owner and new to this forum any advice is much appreciated.

BACKGROUND: My friends and I bought a 1994 V6 for our senior project for $800. The car has 300,000 miles on the body but the PO says the engine and trans was rebuilt 100k ago. The key that came with the car is very worn and barely unlocks and locks the passenger side door and does not lock or unlock the drivers side door (we do it from the inside). We realized that the ignition works without the key. I can turn the ignition with those things (I don't know what they're called) and the car starts. So I ordered a new ignition lock cylinder from rockauto.com.

QUESTION: My question is this: I assume the ignition lock cylinder comes with a new key and I'll need to make copies of that for my friends and I. But now the door lock keys will still be the old keys. Can I get new door locks that match the new key for the new ignition lock cylinder? Did the car originally come with a remote that I can program to match the car? Was a remote an option?

A good locksmith should be able to copy the door key and ignition key on to one single key blank and you can have more copies of it made anywhere that has a key machine. I had to replace my ignition cylinder years ago and carried two keys until a friend of mine that is a locksmith combined them in to one key.

As far as the remotes go they were an option on the 94-95's but will only work if your car came with the module from the factory. If it didn't come with the module I believe the wiring should be in the trunk to add it. You will have to remove the carpet panel on the drivers side of the trunk to get to the wiring. Should have a couple of connectors and I think they are gray. Pretty sure all cars were wired for it even if the module wasn't installed at the factory.

You can re-pin your door locks, or the ignition lock cylinder. You can also buy a matched set of locks which can be much easier (probably cheaper than dealing with a locksmith).

Last time we ran into this the Dealership replaced all the key cylinders and ignition with a matching key set for around $100. It was just easier to do that than match up our own lockset.

If you really want to add keyless entry, you will need to get a "keyless entry module" used. They are not produced anymore, but it's a solid state box that doesn't wear out very often. Mustang Parts Specialties in Winder, GA will most likely have one available. You can get the key fobs on ebay, and they come with directions on how to program them. The "keyless entry module" plugs in on the driver's side of the trunk behind the trunk liner.

Not uncommon for the 94-95 V6 cars and it was also standard on the 95 GTS and 95 R model.

When you buy an ignition cylinder for our cars, only the very front of the key is cut by the ignition cylinder manufacturer. This is because the front of the key turns the ignition cylinder while the rear part of the key turns your door lock cylinders. Take your new key and old keys to a locksmith, they will match the rear portion of your key to match the rear portion for the door cylinders. Shouldn't cost much at all. Friend of mine did it within 10 mins and didn't charge a dime.
