Turbo Kits

So i was looking on Late Model Restoration and they have two turbo kits i was interested in. One was a Helion kit for 4k and the other was an On 3 kit for only 1.5k. I read the descriptions and they both seemed to have the same parts included, except the fact that the cheaper kit has a bigger turbo. I dont know if im missing anything but which would be a better deal?

The Helion kit is a direct bolt on setup no cutting or fab work. No headers are included so tack on another $500 (Yeah right ever tried doing a turbo setup? There is always something that needs fabed)
The on 3 kit needs intense fab work. Just because the turbo is bigger doesn't always mean it's better.

Where did you read the Hellion kit doesn't have headers? Says it does in the parts list......

To the OP, you get what you pay for. The standard turbo in the ON3 kit is made in Brazil or something like that. I've heard if you go that route, you should opt for the better turbo upgrade.
 
I can't for the life of me understand why people bother with turbo kits on stock, block Fox bodies?

They're twice the price of a tried and true centrifugal supercharger (Paxton, Vortech, ATI....pick one). Three times as complex, far more involved to install, NEVER a direct bolt on, always perform inconsistently and can be a real pain in the ass to tune.

Any of the above mentioned blower companies produce kits more than capable of producing power levels that far exceed the strength of the stock block. The fact that they also all now build self contained kits that require no additional oil lines to plumb makes them even more attractive.

.....yet guys still allow themselves to be brainwashed into thinking that "turbo" is the only way to go.

I used to say the same thing. I still think it, but mostly keep it to myself these days.
Many do it and say they wanted to be different. I sorta get that, but it's been done enough times now that it really doesn't get any more street cred than an SC.

Vortech's are affordable and predictable, turbo's, who the hell knows how much trouble it will be. Some none, some so bad that you might as well toss it in the garbage.
Not to mention when a part on a turbo setup fails some companies choose to blame the installer.

If you gave me an On3 kit for free, i'd either sell it and buy an S trim or trade it for one.
Hellion kits are pretty nice, but double the cost of a good sc? That makes it less attractive.

I think turbos have a place, just not on a street car that will make say 600rwhp or less. You gotta at least be after more hp than a T trim IMO.

Turbos are by no means an easy route. I know two guys that have been running on3 kits for a couple years....one has had no problems and self tunes with moates quarter horse....the other guy has been through a block and a ish load of other issues. The first guy is mild mannered and usually drives the speed limit...the other guy is a boasting ignoramous that loves to show off every chance he gets and who knows if his car has ever been properly tuned. Guy one is a nuclear engineer....guy two is a self proclaimed mechanic. I love the sound of a v8 with a blow off valve. The on3 kit doesn't come with fuel injectors, maf, wideband o2, or tune. Also, the ceramic ball bearing turbo is way better than the journal bearing turbo in the kit. You have to expect to spend a couple grand more with either choice. The trans or clutch, brakes, suspension, and the chassis have to be able to handle the power either way. A turbo is in my future but I'm almost 40 and a master mechanic that can tune and install my own parts....a dart block is also in my future....when I hit the lotto or go to heaven. [emoji12]
 
I'm running a single gt45 on my 347 dart (first had it on a stock block which didn't last long on 12psi) and love it. Yes was a complete pain to install but the outcome is definitely worth it. Crazy power and hard to beat the sound of a turbo v8. Also found the megasquirt pnp ecu to be very user friendly and easy to tune with the turbo system.

I went turbo crazy power very fast.... but next build will be a supercharger...

I'll say it's not for the impatient. What made me want to do it was the fact that comparable sized turbo to sc compressor wheels head to head... The turbo will typically net 100 lb ft more torque. And mine does... But don't ask how many swear words it took to get it. All worth it kicking hell out of people on the freeway, though. It pulls like mad up to the rev limiter in every gear.
