Differences In Steering Rack For 17" Or 18" Wheels?

Hey Guys,

I have a 2010 base convertible. Looking to change out the rack. The car came stock with 17" wheels but I found a great deal on some 18" 2015 take offs and put those on.

Anway know, do i replace my rack with the exact same part or do I opt for the 18" rack?

I have never heard of changing the steering rack for different wheel sizes (maybe someone else here has). Compare the width and offset to make sure it won't rub inside or stick out too far, and make sure to get the appropriate size tire to maintain the same overall height.

That's interesting. Maybe they are different steering ratios or something. If you really want to find out, you might be able to take the part numbers to Ford and ask what the differences are. I still don't see why you would have a problem with your current rack. People change wheel size all the time.

If those are indeed the tire measurements, the new tires are almost an inch taller. Make sure you adjust your speedo to account for it.

If I recall correctly in 2010 only GT500s and Mustang GTs ordered with the Track Pack option came with 19" rims. I know that the Track Pack cars use GT500 stabilizer bars maybe they use the closer ration GT500 steering rack as well. That would can account for a different rack for cars with 19in rims. I have no idea why there would be different racks for cars with 17"and 18" rims. In 2010 did V6s only come with 17" and GTs without the Track Pack 18"?

This got me curious so I checked Fordparts.com , they show the same thing, 3 different racks for 2010 Mustang GT's depending on the wheel diameter. I wanted to see this was something unique to '10s so I looked at '11s ....9 different racks depending on both wheel size and build date.
Having said that, there are probably 10s of thousands Mustangs out there with larger wheels then they rolled out of the factory with, without out any issues, so I wouldn't worry about it. Like racerraj said go with the same rack that came off the car.

Correct. I am not sure if this is BS just to keep people from buying used parts out of fear of getting the "wrong" rack. I really don't think there is a difference. Fear-mongering stealerships.

This should be all you need. Steering rack stops. $11.95. :)

    Steering Stops

Upgraded from the stock 16" V6 wheels to a set of 18" Ford Racing OE Bullet Rims with 235-50ZR18's and installed these stops. I don't usually go from stop to stop while turning, but with these it doesn't matter. Zero rubbing at full stop in either direction. 10 min install. I used a pair of tile nipper pliers to crimp the new clamps so I did not have to buy a special tool. Worked great. No re-alignment of the front end is necessary do to the "C" clip style of the stops. Great product at a great price compared to the Ford sets that you can buy and that also require tie rod removal and realignment for the install.

    steering locks

The Roush steering racks are the best way to go if you are rubbing in the front while turning, very cheap in price and an easy install. Took about 20 minutes to do in my garage. Very good product and stopped all the rubbing I had in the front while turning.

    Easy fix for tire rubs

Super easy install. I bought these because I fitted 18x10 wheels to the front and the rim edge just about ground itself on the control arm. The tire would be rubbing everything around. I saw these on American Muscle's site and ordered up a set. Since I already had the car on jackstands, I had them installed in about 20 minutes. Popped off the factory clamps, slid off the boots and snapped on the stops in about the time it took to type this. I fitted the new clamps. I don't own the proper clamp tool but I used end-cutters to pull down the clamps. Perfect.

Works, and is easy to install

I upgraded from 16" to 18" wheels, and lowered my car 1 inch in front. I detected a slight rub when turning hard right. After installing these stops all the rub was gone. They installed in less than 15 minutes. I have not noticed any difference to turning radius to speak of.

    Good deal!

$12 + free/fast shipping + fixes all tire rub-- what more could you want! I installed this on my 2014 V6 Base model after noticing tire rub with my 19" GT take off wheels. This solved the problem and was a good deal in my opinion. In regards to the Oetiker pliers, i bought a set off of Ebay for around $20.

That was my assumption, that's why I looked, at Fordparts.com and RockAuto and they both show the same thing:different racks and tie rods based on which wheel diameter the car came off the line with. The racks are all the same dimension, the issue must be rubbing with the larger rims, so the racks with the larger rims must limit how far the wheel can turn.

Are those just steering rack limiters?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk

Yea, I remember seeing the plastic clips on the inner tie rods of the stock steering gear now that you mention it. I assumed all gears came like that. I remember they wrap around the inner tie rod where it screws in to the rack? Shouldn't be difficult to put on with the right grease involved (not to mention it comes with new c clamps for the boots) and steering centered. More work to jack up the car and get access really.
