So, today I paint again. I went down to the paint store, and bought a qt. of monster orange. To save Dave time, I'm gonna spray the back sides of the doors and trunk so they can be hung and wont have to be painted off the car when that day comes.

I'll also paint the oil cooler shroud as it was one of the damaged items from the UFO incident, buff the front bumper, and on Wednesday bolt the shroud to the bumper, and mount the oil coolers inside.

So,......lets pray for a good day shall we?

Ok. Big day.

On Friday I got one additional qt. of G-monster orange paint. For those of you here, I've decided to take a friends offer to professionally paint the car for the miserly sum of a plane ticket from his town to mine for around 500 bucks. The really good news is that by some stroke of really good fortune, and some magic dust thrown around by the body shop elf, PPG has taken an interest in the monster, and offered to comp their premium Concept brand acrylic urethane paint system so the monster will have a really nice skin this time around. The only stipulations are that I use a professional painter, and have it painted in a real paint booth.

Since PPG agreed to the product, I've established contact with the distributor and they are looking for a shop that'll let me use their booth over the week end. He said that the typical shop would be receptive to that especially if I offered to replace their booth filters (150-200).

So,...in the grand scheme of things,...I'm getting around 1000.00 at cost worth of materials and a pro painter that'll guarantee results for the price of about 1000.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me

That damn monster,......all the time I'm cussin' him he's out rubbing elbows with the powers that be using his "influences" to get something for nothing.....whoda thunk it?

So,...to save that guy time on the non-essential areas I've decided to spray the back side of the trunk, and doors so that they can be installed and painted in place.

Since the last attempt at using this paint failed so miserably, I decided to document the first coat.

See, not "hosed on". Just enough to insure a light, even coat.

Second, and third coats follow,...only this time it ends up looking like this:

Now admittedly, I'm no painter, but if you ask me,...that door turned out pretty decent.

as did the trunk.

On my other forum, I said I was gonna color sand and buff the front bumper so that I could bolt the oil cooler shroud on, and install the oil coolers.

Of course, pictures never look as good (or bad) as stuff does in person,...but again, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Since it wasn't bolted down, I had to be very careful that the buffer wheel didn't get hold of it, and rip it off the stand,..so in the grand scheme of things, it could probably be better. Once it's bolted on,...I'll hand rub it in the ares that still need a little work.

But,..when you put dude on the bumper, bolt the bumper on, mount the coolers, and put the monsters' shoes on and set him on his feet,....this is what that looks like.

There is a "splitter" that hangs beneath the shroud that spans the width of the front bumper. I'm gonna wait to install that till after the fenders are in place because it makes it hard to get them on w/ risking hitting it. but that is what will bolt to those tabs that you see hanging off the shroud.

That quarter panel looks like it's about 10' long..

The poor dirty, dusty monster.

This is why I bolted the doors on. Even though I marked the positions where the doors were the last time I had them on,..they needed adjustment. Adjusting them F'd up the paint on the hinge bulkhead. Fortunately, this area will be exposed, so when we paint it, this area will get scuffed and shot w/ the good stuff.

I about blew a nut pushing the monster back into his pen,...but nonetheless he's back inside, and both of my nuts are still where they're supposed to be. So all in all,.. it's all good. Doors are hung, but I'm holding off on installing the trunk until after I talk with Dave to see if he wants that installed or not.

Is it weird that I'm excited about your paint? lol
Looks great, can't wait to see it done- don't forget the go pro

Well you are making some fine progress, Mikey. Its too bad your wheels are all F'd up from the sand blasting. You going to try to refinish them, or buy another set?

Also, that front facing pic of the Gila in your driveway looks like a damn Jason hockey mask. Friggin awesome.

Ironically, as things go with this car,..I'll probably paint them satin black.(as opposed to the gloss finish that they were before) The polished lip will get the same orange as the body.

Leave the deck lid off Mike, I'll shoot it with the fenders. The jambs of the trunk will look really nice that way.

The jambs look really nice, good job on them.

The G. Monster needs to talk with the Frankenstang and get me that hookup.....

Yeah,...Who knew he was such a wheeler dealer?
Guess he wanted to be sure that Dave was gonna be able to spray the best stuff he could when he gets here.

It's interesting what you learn when stuff like this happens though.

You learn that the paint was used exclusively by Kimball to paint their grand pianos with.

You learn that the Grisham movie " The firm" duplicated the lobby of the Peabody hotel and basically used the same black paint sprayed over plywood to simulate the black marble floor in the real hotel, and that the black paint survived being walked on by cast and crew for the duration of that shoot.

You learn that this product is equivalent to Dupont's Imron, with similar fleet and aircraft uses because of the super high gloss, and extreme duty durability.

Just what any G monster needs when crawling along on its belly in the deserts of SW Arizona.

As the saying goes Mike, "nice things happen to nice people"

Hey, Mike.
1. You post nice pics. With the front fenders and the trunk lid, it'll only look like 8 1/2' to 9'.
2. Can the top of the inside of the door match the color of the interior mesh?
3. Are you still looking for a hood? http://car-part.com/
4. The head-on picture reminds me I'd like to taper in my front fenders like my Capri. Why I keep following your build.
