Tuning Questions

My car has GT40 heads, E303 cam, 1.6 roller rockers, upgraded valve springs, MAF conversion, and 75mm TB. I just put in 30lb injectors and a 255 Walbro (bought it with stock fuel system, those upgrades, and a blown trans) my question is: should I get it dyno tuned or should I get MegaSquirt? Once it's tuned I don't plan on any engine mods for at least a couple years because this is a track car and I want to focus on suspension and upping skill levels first.

While i'm not the biggest fan of tuning mild setups in general, you are way over injectored, so you may need to.

Now if you were running 19's with a 75mm meter, i'd so don't bother tuning it.

If it were my car? I'd pull out the 30's and go back to stock injectors. 19's will support just short of 300rwhp, best case scenario you have about 275rwhp. (unless you are talking gt40x aluminum heads).

Tuning equimpment and standalone would just be money down the drain with the relatively low level of complexity of your parts.

Well once I got it running with the previous setup, it started running horribly and backfiring. I assumed it was running lean due to the upgrades and that was the reason for the injectors and fuel pump. If not undersized fuel system, what could be causing this?

You'll have to run codes. Buy a scanner and do that first. Also is the MAF tuned to the 30 lb inj? If it was acting up before upgrades more than likely you have a sensor issue, vacuum leak, dirty iac or MAF,and/or probably a few other "guesses".

Okay, I explained that poorly. It ran okay but felt sluggish with the 19's when I bought it and I checked the air filter and it was pure brown/black. When I took it off, I saw that inside there were socks underneath the filter to maybe restrict airflow. When I fixed that is when it started running lean. That's why I guessed it was the fuel system. I also haven't started it up since the injector upgrade because I was waiting on advice for what to do about tuning for the bigger injectors.

@a91what may be able to shed some light on the pros of tuning/upgrading to a mega squirt

I think I may get one anyway just so I can see what's happening in the engine, because it's definitely not running right and spark plugs and O2 sensors didn't fix anything. I also can't find the OBD plugin or fusebox. They seem to be near the firewall or something. I guess there's a reason it was listed cheap :bang:

Hope that helps man

Okay, thanks for the diag port, never used one on a fox, but the fusebox has been relocated somewhere inside the dash. It's not in the normal spot. Would it be safe to start it up in the current condition of backfiring and running poorly to get a reading on the port?
You should be able to pull some codes with the Key On Engine Off..
As far as starting it,if it will idle I guess I'd try it,just be mindful if it goes pig rich etc..
@hoopty5.0 offer any advice?

Megasquirt EMS is not for the faint of heart it requires a lot of patience and practice tuning once you get the skill down you can pretty much do anything. I would say the pros are the fact that you get unlimited adjustability and flexibility with the system you can turn anything on and off via program programmable outputs you can use any number of methods for the tuning process. The cons of the system is its complexity it has a steep learning curve. That said we have a megasquirt help thread on here if you're interested

I've decided on a MegaSquirt. I didn't realize I was only running high 200's for hp so I'll slap a turbo on there. A MegaSquirt would assist greatly right now with seeing actually what's going on and I will need one regardless for the turbo. Thanks guys! Side note: just picked up a nice, lightly used MM torque arm and PH bar setup for $500

Don't go messing with megasquirt before you get your car running right.
It's not a substitute for doing required repairs, it may have you chasing your tail indefinitely.

Your issue currently is likely just a basic repair.
With your mods your car should run just like it did stock.

gotta ask. what's a muscled salmon?
Hahaha so when xBox 360 came out I got one for Christmas and couldn't think of a username. MuscledSalmon was one it randomly generated for me, and, being 9 years old, I thought it was badass. It stuck and has been my go to username ever since and became my nickname in high school when everyone else started lifting weights to be that new trend of like skinny and muscular but I went for powerlifting and pure size and ended up beating a state record.
