I just acquired my first fox. It's anot 89 gt auto. The current issue on the chopping block is this shifting problem. When selecting park with the selector, the car stays in a forward gear, however the park anti-roll away catch is engaged. Not a familiar area for me, just thought I would get some input, before climbing under the car

I assume the transmission actually shifts? Will the shifter go easily through all the gears and does the indicator move at all? Does the shifter lock out before you move into R or P by needing to hold the button on the shifter?

It seems to be all functioning properly inside the cab (shifter, neutral ss, and button lock). Not too sure about the indicator. But I can push the button and shift to R it tries lunge forward. Shift back to park and it goes nowhere. Neutral Rev in park and it's revs to around 2100rpm but seems to be in a bind. It doesn't hit the limiter as it should, shares more characteristics having parking brake engaged when you try to take off. That brought me to think the trans is in a forward gear (I believe to be second).

Got look a little closer at the problem, linkage is fully functional shifter is functioning properly. With the linkage disconnected from the transmission, the gear selector on the transmission catches in all positions as it should. I'm thinking the transition is shot and was in gear when it went out, but I don't know

I made the mistake of nosing it up to the shed on a hill and in all shifter positions it tries to lunge forward. Fluid is over full (cold not running) and looks to be full of glitter (metal shavings). I have a sn95 that I can swap trannys with. Are they the same length?

Fluid level cold, engine not running is useless. Glitter in the oil anytime means tranny is in trouble. Don't know about the sn95, I think it maybe longer, if you can, get yours rebuilt.
Don't bother changing the oil, rebuilt or replace.
