96 Gt And It Is Misfiring On Cylinders

  • Sponsors (?)

I have a misfire on cylinders 1 and 6 I have replaced the ecm, plugs, wires, and the coil it is still misfiring cylinders 1 and 6 can anyone give me any ideas on what the problem could be please and thank you.

Pull all the plugs first so you don't kill the battery (Helps to put it on a slow charger). Check each cylinder one at a time and write down the results. They will be 120-160ish (results may vary) You're looking to see that all are within a small percentage of each other. Hopefully that makes sense. If you have an issue on those cylinders related to head gasket, broken spring, valve issue etc.

Welcome to stangnet.

Sorry I missed your post, I would have replied sooner.

I'll move you thread to the '96-'04 tech section, you'll get some help there.

Good to have you with us.

Are you aware that cylinders 1 and 6 have a common coil pack circuit? To me this is too great of coincidence to ignore. Since you have replaced so many parts, we should assume the common causes such as coil packs, plug wires, spark plugs are OK.

IF this were my car I would confirm that the coil pack is actually getting a pulse from the PCM. At the coil pack inspect the electrical connector looking for bent/pushed pins. Use a "noid" test light between pins 1 & 2 and pins 3 & 2. IF not low voltage ignition pulse look for a problem in the PCM signal return or a bad PCM coil driver.

I have replaced the PCM or ECM twice the first time it ran OK but still didn't have the power I had before the original went bad but after about a week it started misfiring again so I changed plugs wires and coil and that didn't fix it so I replaced the ecm again and it still didn't fix the problem

No work like that has been done to it it is a daily driven car for me I bought it on February the only thing I've had to do to it was put a ball joint on it the car was running great I stopped one evening and got gas and when I started it up to go home it was misfiring and the check engine light started flashing a friend scans it for me and found that cylinders 1 and 6 was not firing that's when I changed the ecm and it last about a week then started again so I changed everything else and the ecm again but didn't fix the problem this time

Check the ground wire between the engine and chassis. Also check the continuity of the four wires to both coils. PCM pins are:
26----darkblue/light blue
52----red/light blue
78----pink/white
104--red/yellow

You'll need a DVOM and a long low gage wire to do this.
