Yes it can be done. Go buy a 1/4" tape kit from a glass shop first. The only thing is to make it look right you need the interior quarter trim...
There is one disadvantage on the round tube. The round tube usually has straps that straddle the stock subframe and that is your attachment points...
Also you can reclock the ring gear or flip it over so wont need a flywheel unless it is totally wasted.

Did you check the steering shaft?
K.B. is gone. On the loose steering sounds like inner or outer tie rods.
Put some 165R 15's up front and your problems will be gone. :D
