battery is new, cables are relatively new. All look clean just to clarify, after I reconnect the battery, the car still doesn't start, just the lights other components work again until I turn the key, at which point I get nothing and all electronics go dead...

Thanks guys. I had matched up the new starter to the old when I bought it. The gear was identical in length/size. The noise actually went away after driving it a while yesterday, so I guess I see what happens next time I drive it.

I had the same problem with mine after replacing the lift cylinders with aftermarket ones. Replacing those with (supposedly) NOS one's did the trick
