I had this same exact problem. The answer above will work. As far as I could tell there is only one way through. I played with it until I got the extension right next to the bolt then attached the socket. Once I knew "the way" I did not have to do this again and was able to pass it through...

I just installed the kit and had the problem immediately on the initial test drive. I am using the stock shifter and have checked the shifter linkage. As it properly goes into P,R,N,1,2, and really it will go into D it just will not get out of second, I do not think it is the linkage.
