I just purchased a Ford Racing X-Pipe that replaces that section only without messing with the cats. If Ford sells it, it must be ok to replace it.

I did. However I won't install it until I get my x-pipe in and I'll do it while I'm crawling around under the car. As well, I'm thinking about changing the tranny fluid.

Dropping a 347 roller motor into a 68 Mustang. I am guessing I wont be able to use the 5.0 oil pan, so I am planning on using a 68 style pan. Is there a difference in oil pumps between a 289 and a 5.0? Is it just a different pickup? Is there a special setup I need to use?

My signature shows the motor. Its a 347 with fully ported heads (flow 320cfm) and intake, custom ground cam. Was going into my 94, but looks like the 68 will get the motor with some sort of carb setup now.

Maybe your IAC is going bad or dirty or could be something else. That's the first thing I'd try. I am working on my 94 right now witha surging issue. There is also a thread on it here at stangnet. Search for surge or surging.
