Without actually listening to the engine it's hard to say what the tick is..or is it a knock?.....Again I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you have bent con rod and or a rod bearing fubared and if so there are no easy or cheap fixes for this. More than likely you're looking at an engine...

You can get the lash adjusters from Ford but I don't know how much they cost, ask in the parts department. But before you go and replace them make sure that in fact that's your problem. No you don't have to remove tha cam girdles, the cams stay in place. As I've said I' ve never replaced them...

Yes it would move if he'd snapped one half shaft becasue he has a traction lock rear end. Maybe he snapped both of them...hard to imagine though.My guess is something went awry in the rear end.
