    What causes an exhaust backfire or afterfire?

    Check your ignition and timing first. The coil is always suspect in this type of circumstance (relatively cheap and easy, too). Ignition boxes can exhibit this type of behavior when failed (or failing). I have seen all these culprits cause this kind of problem.

    IMRCs aren't a problem on 99s +. Ford has a TSB for pinging on 01s to reprogram the computer due to lean condition. Maybe your 99 has a similar problem.

    Rack limiters worked on my 85 with 17x9 255 40 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup race tires. I had a similar problem, but the rack limiters fixed it. Do a search on here for their part numbers. You get them from the dealers in 4 packs, about 2 bucks each.
