Heads off - stock cylinder walls/pistons? (pic)

I just did heads on a stock motor that had never been apart with 130K (original miles). Looks exactly the same as yours. Head had gasket failure to coolant passage. Was not "steam cleaned" but looked dirtier with yellow coolant deposits.

    weird engine temperatures

Aw shucks Hissin, now I'm blushing. I still would be concerned with the air pocket in the lower intake. If you have the sender out, fill the intake with fluid then check it in a day or two. I wonder if the air pocket comes back?

    weird engine temperatures

Make sure the hole is mounted at the highest point straight up. Just a vent hole to release any trapped gas. If the engine is running then fluid should shoot out the ECT port. Hot or cold you should have fluid coming out that hole. Are you sure your belt is not slipping and is the propper...

    weird engine temperatures

I agree with Hissin50. Cooling fan clutch may be the culprit. They are about 32 bucks and easily testible. The viscoelastic goo leaks from the front seals and doesn't allow the fan to operate properly. The gauge thing is possible. Your symptoms are exactly what happens when you have air in...

UNKNOWN ENGINE or EXHAUST TAPPING SOUND?

Exhaust leak. Probably at the block flange or collector. Sound bounces off the ground and under carriage and can "trick" you into the location of the problem.

compression dheck to determine blown head gasket?

Not necessarily. I just replaced a blown head gasket this weekend. The #6 had a leak to the water jacket. All cylinders were 150 to 160 PSI compression. The leak was small enough to cause cooling issues, but not detectible with a comression tester. Also,my cooling system pressure tester...

    weird engine temperatures

You may have a blown head gasket. When I say blown, I mean a micro leak. Run your heater vent. Does your heat change up and down. Do you loose heat completely? Compression stroke forces hydrocarbons into coolant. Coolant looses efficiency to cool (car runs hotter). Coolant outgasses in...

    Ceramic Ford Racing Headers

I just installed a set last night. Replaced heads, which makes installation much easier. Excellent quality. Much better than aformentioned brands (BBK). Threw in a set of stage 8 bolts and it looks hot! Cant use a wratchet to change plugs anymore. Now use a spark plug socket and box wrench...

    Major Holly S#$%!

I think I would leave it and see if it fits in the sealing ring of the gasket. Or get it re-sleeved.

    head swap troubles

There is no way to get the heads on the dowels without lifting or disturbing the lower intake. Then you have to deal with the gaskets... The problem is not getting the lower intake out with the dizzy left in. It's going the other way. You want to make absolutely sure you don't misalign or...

expert opinion on head replacements needed

Hey, thebocsez, I just noticed that on the head gasket instructions from felpro. Way cool way of KNOWING you did it right rather than guessing. Thanks all.

expert opinion on head replacements needed

Rick, I stopped after heads were torqued. I looked at the old gaskets and noticed I put the new gaskets on exactly as the old gaskets. Meaning pass side was grey up and drivers was blue up. The "front" on the gaskets does match the front of the motor. It looks like felpro used the same...

    heads good what else?

My guess is head gasket. Do you have a leak-down tester? Did you check your heads for flatness / warp? Do you have coolant system pressure tester? large amounts of RTV is a tell tale sign of a problem.

expert opinion on head replacements needed

The gaskets were felpro. I just checked the passenger side which I know is on correctly. The grey side is facing up. In theory the drivers side should not have grey facing up. I looked, and it has the blue side facing up. Therefore, I am confident I have them on correct. What do you think...

expert opinion on head replacements needed

Tonight I replaced both heads on the 88lx. I am absolutely certain I got the passenger head gasket on properly with the rear water galleys matching the gasket (meaning front of gasket = front of block). However, I can't remember specifically inspecting the drivers side head gasket for proper...

stock hydraulic lifter weep hole orientation?

Do the stock hydraulic roller lifters have a specific orientation. Meaning weep hole facing up or down? The stock motor for my 88 has them going both ways. Is this normal? Thanks for taking the time to help.:nice: Also, do the lower head bolts that enter the water jacket need a...

    AOD tail shaft seal

Hi all. Had the 88LX on the rack and noticed the tail shaft was soaking wet in tranny fluid - closest to the yoke (had slow leak for about a year). Car is 17 years old, is the tail shaft seal the same as the T5? How difficult is it to replace? Can it be replaced without dropping the...
