4 Hole Carb Spacer on Vic Jr. on 408W Stroker

Do not swap out a good single plane for a dual plane on that 408. No way! Traction will be your problem NOT low end torque. I like phenolic spacers if you can fit one. Spacers are sometimes strange in what works and what doesn't. I think a lot has to do with your current tune. But I would use...

    66 conv. 302 5 speed 8" rear

I'm with the others. Detroit locker and 3.55 gears in my 8" rear with many dragstrip passes deep into the 11's. Still going strong.

Just thought I'd share a few pics of my build

Wow! That color is great and the stance over those huge wheels and tires is very eye catching. Very nicely done!

    Max-G 66 Mustang

Holy Max G effort! That chassis looks nice. Who makes it?

What do you think of this 302 build?

Heads and cam could be much better. The engine program sounds like it's about a 100 hp off. A set of AFR 165 or 185's or Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170's would be FAR better. Also the shorty headers do not flow as well as full length. For exhaust I would suggest using a minimum of 2.5" mandrel...

    Max-G 66 Mustang

Thanks! My tail pipes are Flowmaster's version of the old LX style slash cut pipes. They are 2 1/2" though vs. the stock 2 1/4". I got them years ago as a full kit for the 65-66 Mustang. But you can buy the tail pipes separately if you want.

    Max-G 66 Mustang

Very cool project!! Gotta keep tabs on this one. A 4.6 would be sweet but that Coyote engine ($$ though) really kicks ass. I've got too many projects right now but I would absolutely love to have the new 5.0 in a Classic.

    Input on 347 combo...

I do not see this combo running 12's on 205/70/14 tires. Too much holding it back. Tiny street tires being one. The hipo manifolds definitely have to go. At least get 1 5/8" long tube headers with minimum 2.5" mandrel bent dual exhaust. What is the rest of your exhaust like? What mufflers? I...

should i up my gear ratio

3.55's would be a huge difference in acceleration over the 2.79's. I'd put 3.55 gears in the 8" rear if I were you. I have run that same combo for years with numerous runs in the 11's. No need for a 9" at your power level.

Update, first time down the track

Just work on the first 60 feet for now. It should be in the 1.6's. Just look at how much you improved from the 1st to 3rd run by lowering your 60 foot by .07 sec. All with the same mph. And 22 mph on the 2nd half of the track is just fine. Mine is usually about 21 (95 1/8 and 116 1/4.)...

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

The Trick Flow heads are very good and are cheaper than the AFR's. Summit has them brand new for under 1K: Trick Flow Specialties TFS-51400004 - Trick Flow® Twisted Wedge® 170 Cylinder Heads for Small Block Ford - Overview - SummitRacing.com Any of the aftermarket heads can be great for a...

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

He's definitely not going to get his 350 HP at 2000 rpm. I still see no reason to use the 165's. I'd stick with the 185's or the Trick Flow Twisted Wedge. Both are very good performance heads that can grow with your HP greediness:nice:

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

Well, if the gist of the thread is not wanting too much power then by all means stick with the stock heads. Do not change a thing.:D

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

MM&FF did a head to head test on the 185's vs 165's on a 302 and the 185's outpowered the 165's from start (3000) to finish (6200). They also did an AFR 185 vs Trick Flow test on a 302 with standard upgraded items (Vic. Jr intake, Demon 750, long tube headers, etc.) and the 185's outpowered...

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

Better than 165's??? Powerheads: cfm @ .500" lift Intake 215 Exhaust 174 AFR 165 cfm @ .500" lift Intake 250 Exhaust 185 The AFR 165's are MUCH better across the board. The 185's are even better:nice:

  What has this thread become? Wow is right! To the OP there is some big time misinformation in this thread. Hopefully you can sift through it.

    2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust.

I see no reason to go with less than 2.5" pipes. They are not too loud, they do not cost more, they fit under our Mustangs perfectly all the way out the back, and they will flow fine for most pretty well built engines. 3" pipes are much louder and that is a good reason not to go with them if you...

    2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust.

Do you seriously think his 347 would run as good as it does with 2.5" pipes? He runs in the 9's at near 135 mph! His engine regularly sees well over 8 grand. Do you know how much air that little 347 passes through it? Well it's easily big block territory. 3" pipes are certainly needed on his car.
