My uncle has a 1972 302 that he want's to rebuild. I need to know the combustion chamber size of the heads to determin what pistons to use. Is there anything we need to know about it? Or is a 1972 302 just the same as the rest of the early 302s? Thanks.

they are not the same as earlier 302s as the 68 model first came out with a 4v head and 4bbl carb. In mid year they added a 2bbl to the 302. By 72 the compression had been lowered and the combustion chambers enlarged. I dont know the exact measurement, but 64cc sounds darn close.

funny you mention the 4 bbl 302 head....from what I've read in many reputable books, the 4 bbl heads are labeled as such but are practically the same as other 2 bbl 302 heads, they have the same valves and runners, but slightly smaller chambers(if I remember correctly). I think they were a 68 only part, when the 4 bbl 302 was rated at 240 hp. If its a 72 engine, chances are it has a later casting than the 68 heads. Can you provide some casting #'s SpeedDemon?
