speedo not working on 96 GT 4.6, went to parts house and purchased VSS and was given a gear driven VSS. PUlled mine out and it was the round Magnet type VSS which I find out later 1999 and later mustang. So I am assuming the transmission has been changed to a later model. My question is will this VSS type work my speedometer cause its still not working.

the gear driven vss will not go into the later model transmission will it? It didn't feel like it would fit in the hole that the round type VSS came out of. I'm thinking it is a later model transmission in the car

for sure a magnet type VSS see pic

The 1999+ model year uses an OSS sensor. The OSS sensor is a non contact speed sensor that uses a toothed reluctor wheel.

The 1998 and older uses a worm gear driven VSS sensor.

The output of the two sensors are NOT compatible to each other. The wiring between the two sensor is DIFFERENT. The sensor used needs to match the wiring harness AND what the PCM is expecting.

Here is a recent thread on the differences between the VSS and OSS sensors.

Suggestion. Research an "Extended range SpeedCal".
