2006 V6 Conv

I bought an '06 V6 Convertible a couple of years ago and should have really bought a V8 (for the power). I like the car a lot but could use more HP. At the time I bought the car, the price of gas was a key factor in choosing the V6.
I am using an SCT Tuner with a custom tune which has increased the HP. Next week, I'm getting dual exhaust from a GT with a take-off GT rear bumper. I know that I need cold air intake but the SCT authorized dealer said it'll cost me the price of the Cold Air Intake plus another $250 for the custom tune that has to go along with it. If I were made of money, that would not be a problem or... I'd buy the 2011 V6 with the 3.7 and 305 Horses. (By the way, I test drove one last weekend and loved it!) Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the HP's on my V6? I want to keep it and don't have the dough for a turbo upgrade. Any suggestions on the SCT tune? I'd think that I could manually tweak my already custom tune for the new intake, but I'm a newbie on my need for speed as well as a newbie on Mustangs and the SCT tuners. This looked like a good forum and I am a brand new member so if I'm in the wrong category, my apologies. Thanks!

Most of the cai's seem to only net you 5 or 6 horses and that is not any value to me. You said new intake so I was surprised you didnt get one then but I understand the mula thing. Did you notice any difference with the intake? Not much 4.0 modding going on here. :)

I purchased a steeda tb spacer, a sb cold air intake, which doesnt require a tune. I can tell a big difference in power. I have a Gt rear bumper and maganaflow dual kit for the v6 for sale if you havent purchased yet paint code tl.

Here are some things that I could think of, but you'd have to look at the costs.

Do they make Underdrive Pulleys for V6's, if so, I would get them.

I know there are Aluminum Driveshafts available for V6's, that's an option.

Headers and possibly an off-road H or X Pipe.

These additions should net you some more power. The only other thing that I can think of is possibly going with some different rear gears. Not an actual power increase, but it will feel like you added more power.

I agree, 5 or 6 horses is not a big improvement. The SCT Tuner was a huge success. The guy who programmed it changed it over to midgrade gas, tweaked the shifts, and removed the speed cap. He popped in a few other custom mods. One of the things I noticed when test driving the 2011 V6 with the 305 is that it has less low end torque "get up and go" than the tune I've got on my '06. Actually, for a V6, it is pretty peppy. I joined this forum to learn more about the mods and to see what others are up to. I appreciate your input! Only 5 or 6 hp's on a new CAI?.... was that with a custom tune? Thanks again!

I have been seeing ads for the spacers and had wondered if they were of any help.
I had talked to the SCT authorized tune specialists, they advised me that any CAI would require a tune in order for it to serve its purpose. Then again, they may just want to charge me the $250 extra to run the dyno. I am wondering if I can adjust my already custom tune and add on the CAI? Does anyone on here have much experience with the SCT X3 Flash Tuners?
Thanks for the offer on the GT rear bumper and magnaflow dual kit. I would have considered it but have already paid a 50% deposit on what is getting installed next week. I actually got a pretty good deal. There is a business in Sanford, NC that will take off my factory V6 rear bumper and replace it with a painted to match (by VIN) GT bumper. They are also installing a GT dual exhaust. Total cost: $550.00, plus they get to keep what they take off my car. I don't think that is a bad deal.
Thanks for reply and the information. I will be considering the spacer along with a possible CAI.

Thank you for the advice. I had read a little about using lighter pulleys but was not sure if they would be effective on the V6. The new gears in the rear offer additional low end torque, right? Any idea on how they affect power or engine wear in the upper gears? I'll also look into aluminum drive-shafts. That is a new idea. I'll have to check into the durability and see what the online world says about the potential benefits.
I like your mustang. The Eleanor grill is on my list as a future purchase.

Thanks for the reply,
