3000 RPM misfire

OK- this is a strange one.

My '01 has pretty much left me alone for the last two years, but it has one issue that I've been trying to fix for the last year or so.

When I'm driving down the road and I let the RPMs stabilize at around 3000 RPM (but not just passing through 3000 like when accelerating), the engine starts missing, the CEL starts flashing, and a "Cyl 6 misfire" code is thrown. The #6 cylinder plug wire is fine and isn't worn/shorted. The only thing I can think of is that the coil pack is bad and has some problem that makes this happen at certain RPMs. I could just replace the coil pack, but I'd rather not shell out the $300 clams I'm sure the dealer will want.

Anyone ever seen this before?
