302 block, aluminum bell housing. iSqured electrial system. Recently installed solinoid to help solve problem. Tried mini and high torque starters

The car generally starts but the starter often remains engaged for a bit. And when the car is hot the starter turns, makes a sick noise and doesn't seem to engage with the flywheel.

Checked voltage at all points and seems good.

Created one and then two .062 shims and that doesn't change things.

Help, please.

Wow - nice looking car. Is it one of the car kits?

Do you have the large stamped steel shim installed between the bellhousing and block?
