4vg motor in the GT?

4v motor in the GT?

whats up guys, Im thinking of swapping a 4v cobra into the GT but im not sure which motor. The thing is im looking at a great deal on a 98 cobra motor on ebay about $900 but isnt that motor a bit weak in power comparing it to say a 99-01 cobra or especially to a newer mach1 (although the mach probably isnt an option due to cost). Also ive thought about building a 4v navi motor but the cobra swap is much more straight foward & inexpensive.

Gimme some feedback guys!

P.S. Does anyone know where on the web i could maybe find one of these motors besides ebay?

A 98' Cobra Motor will put monster power under your hood. I've driven the 99-01' model Cobras with no difference whatsoever in my opinion.

You'll still be lacking torque (bottom end grunt) but this is typical with the 4v. I recommend you buy that motor (if your going to buy one) and slap on some gears (4.10, 4.30) and drag radials. All else being stock, your 98' Cobra motor with them mods should put you close to the 12's. Now, if you supercharge that combo I'm not even gonna imagine what #'s you can put down.

I'll be sticking to my 2v motor (it's the reason I bought a GT) and squeezing every last ounce of power out of it I can. Plus, I wanna be able to dust those LS1's and have em "think" i gotta 4v :D

Good luck on your project and happy killing on the streets :p

Thanx...The only difference ive come to think that there is in the 98 cobra and the 99+ is the intake manifold just by glancing at both motors. Ive heard that the heads on the 99+ cobras flow better.

Persay that both are different (heads & intake) i think the 99+ intake could be swaped into the 98 cobra motor and a p&p job on the 98 heads will yield improved cfm thus they will atleast be close to the 99+ heads im sure.

Last Questions: #1- I believe that the 98 cobra motor is pretty much just a drop in engine (No need to buy any supporting mods) or am I incorrect.

#2- You say that the low end grunt from the cobra is weak my question is how did they improve the low end grunt on the mach1, cams?

you won't be able to just slap a 99+ intake on a 98 motor. the 98 heads are of a different design (twin port) i think it's called, and the 99+ heads are tumble port design so the intakes won't match up. the 4v motors lack low end torque because they are really rev happy. basically once you get above 3k rpms...it won't matter about that missing torque as they pull really hard once you hit that engine speed. hope this helps.

ModularMike,

I'm not sure how they improved the low end torque on the Mach 1 but I can tell you this... like Bornstanger said it's extremely rev happy. Personally in my experiences with the Cobras (98-01) it takes more than 3000rpm to pin me to the seat. It's more like 4500rpm. This is why YOU MUST gear the car to stay in the upper part of the band. Driving a completely stock 99' Cobra feels like a Ford Escort in comparison to an identical setup with 4.10's.

I'm not sure what all is involved in doing the swap. Maybe somebody else can chime in that has done this....

i noticed that you are going to get a 98 motor, it should be a pretty straight swap except for a few miscellanious things such as the wiring harness and a couple cables. but i'm sure i'm missing some things as well.
