5.0 vs 4.6

Ya lol anything is possible. Ive raced people that have fox body 5.0's stock and they think they are awsome, then I race them with my lightly modded 5 speed ZX2 and kill them then I tell them I own a 5.0 stang and if they ever want to make their stang run like it should just ask around for me and ill help. They don't like me anymore usually just because they lost to an escort tho :( :D

Yep drivers mean a lot...

The 99+'s will fool you when you are in them. They are quicker than they feel. Their powerband is that smooth...

Stock 5.0L and stock 99+, the stock 99+ will win in every category.

Also, don't just look at E.T., the mph is very important. The 99+ win for sure in that category!

There is a difference between 99 and early 00 and 01-04. The 99 and early 00 are faster, do to motor setup (mm&ff did an artcle on it).Around here 01's run 9.3-9.7 in the 1/8 so the car are almost even so it will be driver to see who wins. 8.9 is pretty quick what was your 60' (you need 1.8) where you on drag radials. What mph did you have for that et?

Anything can happen in a race and drivers play an important role. Bob Cosby for instance, got 13s out of a stock 5.0 with free mods and some traction, this is quicker than "typical" stock 4.6 autos, and demonstrates a case where the driver could determine the outcome of such a match-up, but since most races pit somewhat average/equal drivers against one another a slight edge would go to the 4.6 in a full 1/4 mile race. Bear in mind your 5.0 isn't nearly as optomized from the factory as the 99-04 engines, so bolt on a few mods and tap into that potential. I know very few enthusiasts that keep their Mustangs stock anyway - "stock for stock" might happen once in a blue moon

Put two 5spd's, one being the 99+ and 5.0L and the 99+ will easily walk away...I've owned both, race both, daily drove both, have all kinds of friends with each and every kind of mustang under 50k...I'm quite familiar with how each run...

s281 - Actually the engines in 01+ have a bit more compression and tend to run just a tick quicker...

Your not gonna beat that 99 stock... seriously. 2 Completely different worlds. Have him mod his and then mod your 5.0 to all heck and back when you get it and you'll kill 'em :)

Buy a Notch if possible. It weighs some 400 lbs less than the GT and more than that vs. verts. I've owned an 86 vert, an 89 GT, a 93 coupe and an 01 GT. Stock for stock that Coupe will run right with it if you can hook and switch gears like John force. If you get a vert or a hatch you're waaaaaaay outta the ball park.

compression does not make the cars faster and they also went to a different trans here is the stats.

1999 4.6 SOHC 260HP Mustang Engine:hail2:
Throttle body: 66.8mm (2.630 inches)
Intake manifold: composite, cast No. XR3E-DC
Cylinder heads: cast No. RFXL3-CZOD
Combustion chambers: 42.40cc
Valves: 1.752/1.417 inches
Rockers: roller type, w/1.80:1 ratio
Camshaft lift: .505/.534-inch lift
Compression ratio: 9.30:1
Pistons: hypereutectic w/.188-inch dish

2001 4.6 SOHC 260HP Mustang Engine:nono:
Throttle body: 65mm (2.560 inches)

Pistons: hypereutectic w/.145-inch dish

The new 4.6L does take to mods just as well if not better than a 5.0.

You are starting with modern designed performance aluminum heads vs iron 20 year old off-the-shelf truck heads. The 4.6L responds very well to intake an exhaust mods and many see solid results with a plenum, TB and full exhaust from headers back. I've seen dyno slips of 270rwHP (300ish flywheel) with just those mods.

Of course...they are expensive mods, but the 4.6L aftermarket is getting cheaper as more mods become available.

Yup, 01+ has a tiny bit more HP, but not much. It's not even enough that ford felt it should rerate the motor (as testing for that costs $$$)

:nono: its less do to the trans taking up more hp and comp does always give power if it did 87 octane gas would not work its the design of the motor. Ford slowed them down to make the cobras look faster.
Ford rated the 99's at 13.9 in the 1/4 and the 01 at 14.1.

s281 - Ford rated by the quarter mile? Show me this...

The 01's are a tick stronger, noticeable...nah...but they do pull a few hp....look at the dynos...if you averaged them...they pull a few more hp...

In this case the extra compression is better;)

99-00's are better to start off with boost though...

What year model is your 4.6L?

I agree with Mustang5L5...good points...seems to be what I have found as well...

What is the best 4.6 for modding dollar for dollar? I must say the 5.0 was a great value.

enyawix - If your talking about bolt-ons, the 99+ will beat the 96-98's in given power but not by a lot. I'm sure the new 05's take nicely to mods with the "new" tuning available...(ex. SCT)...

DOHC likes superchargers, but so do the SOHC...why heck the 4.6L just likes superchargers...:)

before you even start to think about racing him when you get a 5.0 you better get plenty of seat time in that car. if he cant drive for **** and your a good driver you can probably take him.

The race is over I spanked him, but it was mostly bad driving on his part. but my mods do help. My next project will be a 4.6

When ford changed the trans from a t-45 it lost power do to the trans taking more hp to move it. Dyno numbers mean nothing it is only a tool to tune with. He is talking about racing pt A to pt B. My friend has a 99 that runs 8.9's stock(w/ k&N) and others with a later model (02)who run 9.2-9.6 depending on driver. An auto you should be able to beat if its stock.
Everone forgot about drivetrain loss.

Interesting vid Speeds, I noticed both cars had exhaust, the 5.0 included shorty headers but the 4.6 had a little more gear, which left the Intake/TB/UDs.
