The Engine blew causing the bags to go off as well.

I didn't hear anything go wrong with the engine. Probally someone wired something wrong, used an airbag ground as a ground for something else, it doesn't take much to set them off.

don't think the motor blew still sounded good after the bags went off.
I know if i were the dyno guy I would defiantly need some new shorts

Why would the airbags blow? The rapid accel/deceleration? Thats all I could think is that the sensors sensed rapid accel/decl and popped?

I would agree w/ the short in the sensors idea. The engine still sounded good, no smoke, etc... IMHO

I saw some smoke, but it might have just been dust from the bags.
