ok guys just got a 89 gt with the AOD. this is my first AOD car and is it normal for it to be so slow? first off it is bone stock right down to the air silencer. from a dead stop it will barely spin the tires. any suggestions or tips or is the 89 50's with the automatic really that pig slow? the gears are 2.73 as well. any help please..... need to feel the power.
You would get more responses in the general 5.0 Tech section. I'll look up a mod and see if they can move the thread over for you. Don't be offended, this section is not visited too often, as it was intended as a EFI tuners area. If you suspect that the car is not running right then you should start out by looking at the trouble codes. I have a link in my sig that should get you through the process if you don't have a scanner. Or do a search here for posts made by 'JRichker' You will find TONS of good info from JR. The gears are a real killer right now. That should probably be one of the first things you modify. 3.73 or 4.10?????? Good Luck jason
the AOD tranny is A DOG compared to the t-5 in STOCK form. I've driven an aod 5.0 and my t-5 equiped car.. the difference is literally night and day. You are lucky the thing will still spin a tire taking off. the common solution would be a tranny build and a good set of gears. Install a nice stall convertor along with a good shift kit. Install a set of 4.10 gears. This is what MOST AOD guys will tell you to get. most t-5 guys will say 3:73's. I've driven both on an aod car.. get the 4.10's. After the tranny build and those gears.. don't be surprised if your car is LITERALLY 1.5-2 seconds faster (in the 1/4 mile) without any actual power mods. It will also burn rubber taking off, and chirp tires shifting into second by itself. yes, the aod needs help.. it needs help pretty bad.
some gears, air filter and a good tune up will wake it up........AOD is known to be a little sluggish though vs. a manual
great responce. i get code 12, and 91. are the 4.10's gonna kill the highway mileage. i don't want 3000 rpm on highway. have had them in a t5 and really wasn't to thrilled. this car will have to drive over 80 miles to the track. what stall do you recomend for a street car with some track and stoplight action? want it to be a lock up i know that much lol
i have ridden in a couple aod 5.0's and iwouldnt have one because its so horrible on power.. yes it is normal .. especially for bone stock .. do a little tranny work and it'll get better
