Does anyone know what the top tape deck colored stereo wires go to on a 96 Cobra with the 460 (and CD deck below)? Is it true there is no illumination wire so an aftermarket stereo will not dime with the headlights on?

The colors are:

Green w/yellow stripe,
Black,
Yellow w/black stripe,
Light blue w/red stripe,
Black w/green stripe,
Orange w/blue stripe,
Dark Blue

Ford Radio Wiring Color Specs


This the color combination Ford uses, I used it on my 96 GT with the same stereo system as you're alluding to. I'm not showing your first combination of Green/Yellow. Put a multi meter on it to ensure it's not powered. Also bear in mind that from vehicle age and heating/cooling cycles original colors will fade, change or discolor.


Green w/Yellow Stripe - ?? (Not showing that color combination)

Black - Ground (chassis)

Yellow w/Black Stripe - Car Radio Switched +12V

Light Blue w/Red Stripe - Car Radio Illumination Wire

Black w/Light Green Stripe - Car Radio Ground Wire

Orange w/Blue Stripe - Car Stereo Antenna Trigger

Blue (not sure of the shade) but it shows this as Car Stereo Amp Trigger

Green w/Violet Stripe - Constant +12V

+LF - Orange/Light Green

-LF - Light Blue/White

+RF - White/Light Green

-RF - Dark Green/Orange

+LR - Gray/ Light Blue
