Electric Fan Wiring Question

I decided to install an electric fan on my coupe and my Mach. I bought two Tauras fans today but didn't get any of the wiring from the cars. Will I need the relay or wiring harness from the original vehicle for these fans? What would be the best way to wire the fan so I can use both speeds and so It will kick on and off at the proper heat range?

i am using the 3.8L taurus fan which is different from a 3.0 taurus, the 3.0
does not have enough air flow to cool a 302, needless to say if its from a 3.8
then your ok.
first you need the plug connector for the fan itself as you stated, there are 3
wires (ground) (low speed) and (highspeed)
the low speed is by far not enough volume of air and is truly sensless to even wire up, leave it unhooked..
you can get a 20.00-30.00 kit which comes with a relay, temp sensor, wiring,
and instructions at your local speed shop it is very easy to wire up and the
temp sensor is a probe that slides between your cooling fins..

taurus 3.8l highside fan blows over 2000cfm
low side is about half of that

3.0 taurus fan high side about 1600cfm

2muchtime, Thanks for your response to my question. I'm sure the fans I bought are from a 3.8 Taurus. They measure 22" wide x 16" length. I'll go back to the yard where I bought them and ask which vehicles they came off of. I'll be able to get the wiring I need too. I looked at the 3.0 Taurus fans and they look to be similar to the Escort style. They're smaller than the II V8 radiator.

I will probably order the relay and temp sensor kits from Jegs.

Did you mount the fan assembly using the strap style mounting brackets?

the taurus fan shroud (GUARD) fits very good to the radiator you wont believe it !
your original fan shroud had/has two bolts on the top, and clips on the bottom to hold it snug.
the elec fan slides down into the clips, and the R.F top bolt hole lines up perfectly to the original..the leftside top needs a hole drilled in the plastic.

one more thing you need to use a shallow head bolt for your w/p pulley
a standard bolt will be to close for comfort, you can get these at a
quality hardware store..(not home depot)
i should be able to get a few pics if you need (weather permitting) :D

2muchtime, Great! Pictures won't be necessary. You provided all the information needed for me to go ahead with mounting the fans.

Both my shrouds have the bolts on the bottom instead of the clips but I'll be able to find the clips needed to slide the shroud assembly into for the correct fit. The shallow head bolts will be no problem to find either. I get some odd ball hardware pieces at a local lawn tractor repair shop.

Thanks for all your help!

Here are some pictures of the install I did on my car. I countersunk the bolt heads into the WP pulley to give me a little more room. Not quite enough reall for my tastes but it clears. As long as I don't have to change a belt I'll be ok.

I was hoping to use the low speed as the "main" setting and the high for when the A/C is on. I doubt it will work but I'll try. Be sure to get yourself a good high current relay, a 3.99 Autozone special WILL NOT cut it. I paid about 22$ a piece and bought two one for the high speed and one for low. These fans draw a pile of current at spin-up and about 30-40 amps when running, as I recall. So a heavy duty alternator is also inline. If you do all the steps it should work well, if you skimp it will bite you in the arse down the road.

Tim, I did see a few of your fan install pictures in a recent post but thanks for reposting them for me. It looks like a nice clean installation and just about made to fit the II.

I don't half step on any work I do because I don't like doing the same job twice. I'll probably order the fan relay kit from Jegs. I might also see if it's possible to use the original wiring and relays from a Taurus.

The coupe has a high amp alternator but the Mach doesn't. Wonder how a 3G would work or a high amp 86SI.

I didn't mean to imply that you would cut corners sorry if it sounded that way. Sometime people miss small things and I was hoping to help you avoid that. I followed the setup that was in the previous post's link to a point. But I used the Flex-a-lite #31147 adjustible fan sensor. It is just a temp. controlled switch. I placed this in series with a relay that on is on when the engine is running. When these two switches are both on, it will turn on the "High Current"' Bosch relay to turn on the fan. I don't know what the spec's are on the Jeg electric fan kit are but the inrush current (the current that is first drawn when the fan motor starts to spin) is well over a hundred amps. for a short period of time, and on High the fan pulls a good bit of current. As for the Taurus controls I tried that and followed the wiring back to its source. They all lead into a box that I assume is some sort of solid-state relay. In design it is much like a Dura-spark box with all the "goodies" sealed in an alum. casing with epoxy.

As for t5he alt. I use the HO-7013 from this site. ALT Parts. along with new bearings it was less then 50$ for a 105 Amp alt. that fit with no modifications.

Good luck and give us progress reports!

2muchtime, That's a very detailed report for the Taurus fan install. That should cover everything needed for this fan setup.

Tim, no offense was taken to anything you said in your previous post. I didn't mean to sound like Adolf and wasn't trying to come across that way. I only meant that I prefer to do the work right the first time to avoid wasting my time and doing a cobby job. Not that I'm Mr. expert, I do make mistakes.

Jegs has the Painless and Perma-Cool fan relay kits. It looks like I won't be able to use either of those relay kits because they don't have a high amp relay. I'll have to use the Bosch 150 amp relay and Imperial controller that is used on the fan install in the website that 2muchtime posted for me.

I'll have to do the coupe first since it already has a high amp alternator. I probably won't find the time to start on it until next week.

Thanks to you and 2muchtime for all your help!
