found steering slop need fix, weld?

Alright, it's on the rack, in the engine bay, above the rag joint, below the the angled u-joint. It's where the little rubber thing is where it goes from bigger to smaller, does anyone know what this is called? I thought it was the slip joint but I think someone said that was under the dash. The rubber piece is all cracked and dry rotted, but it looks like you could peel the rubber piece off and run a little arc weld or mig weld right there and it would be gone. Does anybody know anything about this piece, and do you think it is okay to weld it?

are you talking about the steering shaft? If its what Im thinking of, you dont want to weld it. That allows the shaft to slide enough to remove it without removing the steering rack.

I have the exact same trouble. It is a slide shaft. I'm looking for a new steering shaft set up that won't break the bank. Anybody have any suggestions?

Seems like that slip joint is a POS. I wish there were a cheaper way to fix it. Seems stupid to drop more cash for the shaft than I just dropped for a new rack.

I welded both slip joints ,one under dash and one in engine compartment,took care of problem.
