OK, been years since I've owned a FPS type game. Getting bored with WoW and looking to get into something else. Not really into all the tactical stuff, just a fun point and pull the trigger kind of game. Mostly looking for something with a good solo campaign, with the option for infrequent online play. The last FPS I played was Halo (the original), so yeah, it's been a while. I was thinking of something like the CoD series perhaps? My current PC (Laptop) should be able to handle most recent games available as I bought it just last month. If you seriously have not tried Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I suggest you play it. It's got an amazing single player campaign and the multiplayer is extremely addictive. I think I'm the biggest CoD4 fanboy in here, so what else would I suggest?
We might share that spot Yes, COD4 is probably the best FPS game ever made to date and COD4 MW2 will be out soon as well. Its nothing like WaW or anyother FPS game out there.
What type of video card does your lappy have? You'll need something more than onboard video, IMO. CoD4 can be a tactical type of game, or a point and shoot, just depends on how serious you are about it. The other PC game I would recommend is Team Fortress 2, its practically free nowdays.
ATI mobility Radeon HD 4650 w/ 1GB dedicated RAM. when I find time this weekend, gonna see about maybe downloading the trial version cod4 to see how well it will run on the laptop.
I've actually been having a fine ol' time playing Soldier of Fortune 1 online. It's old as hell, but it's simple, fast, and fun, and there's still plenty of folks hosting servers for it and lots of folks to kill.
I've never played Team Fortress 2, but I only hear good things about it. Another one that's pretty fun is Battlefield Heroes. It's cartoony and free to play online. Battlefield Heroes ...and the song will be stuck in your head for a month.
I do remember playing the original teamfortress online through gamespy. That was back in the days of the 486s and the Pentium 1s. So does CoD4 online play require a monthly subscription or is it free? I'm trying to get out of the monthly subsrciption thing. both are looking good.
Back in the day, Half-Life and Counterstrike were the bomb-diggity. TF1 was okay, but I never could get into that one quite as much as Counterstrike, or some of the other HL total-mod games.
Hmmm ... that one actually looks pretty darned fun. Kinda like BF: 1942 but a little more forgiving - not everything causes instantaneous death. The website's kinda weird and doesn't really give a basic outline of the game, itself. Is it free to play online but you have to buy the game, or is it entirely free?
OK, Picked up CoD4 thru a direct download (perfectly legal) and it was $10 cheaper than walmart. Game play is nice , graphics are good, motion was smooth. My only issues with it are the "timed missions" ( I really hate those) and I feel like I'm being "rushed" through the game so far. Other than that, I think it will keep me entertained for a while.
OK, so I've been playing on-line for a bit. My only complaint is that the skill sets per map are grossly un-level. By this, I mean that you have "Generals" ranked in with "Privates". Which means there are usually a handful of players running around the map just slaughtering everyone. I am lucky to get 2 kills and 74 deaths during a single round of team deathmatch, just because i (and others like me) am overpowered. Is there a way to search for maps that are set for a more consistant/level playing field? One that is perhaps within +/- 5 levels of my own skill rank? Thanks
Sounds like WoW where you get a couple of level 70 douchebags roaming around and just killing n00bs left and right without any effort at all. These games with player level systems really take the fun out of FPS multiplayer because it ceases to be about skill and it's more a matter of who has no life and plays the thing 24/7 so they can have the most experience/kills and thus the most power.
Nope, there's no way to search. The matchmaking is supposed to set you up with people of the same skill level, but that rarely happens. You're gonna level automatically and with leveling comes better guns and perks. You're probably gonna get slaughtered when you first start out, but use that as a learning opportunity to figure out where you need to improve and to learn the maps. Once you figure out the sniper positions and hiding places, you'll learn where to look. Watch the kill cams to see what happened when you died and definitely use cover. Just don't stand out in the open trying to shoot people. One of my friends can't figure that out and wonders while he keeps negative kill ratio. Find a gun you're comfortable with and stick with it for a while. I like putting steady aim with stopping power on automatic weapons with iron sights until I get my 25 kills for a red dot sight just so I can fire from the hip when I run up on someone. Don't worry about the level either. I've killed level 55 tenth prestige guys constantly. Some people just suck. It'll take a little practice and you may have to prestige a few times to get a lot of kills, but eventually you'll get it.
Downloaded a Bot Mod for practice of the online play, so I can learn the maps and stuff. I know the Mod version can't be used to up my skill set then go to an un-modded server, but that was not my intention. The Bot Mod affords me the luxury of taking my time in a low level hostile environment to train
