Can anyone tell me if 90's efi heads will work on an older motor, like a '78? I know they will bolt up, but how well will they work? I've looked all over the web, and the popular opinion is they work ok. I would think the efi heads would have different sized valves and chamber, but I am not an expert. Thanks for any input.

They should work, and if they are E7TE or GT40 castings they should be be better than the originals. As with any head swap you should always check your piston to valve clearance.

E7s have a smaller combustion chamber which will bump your CR about .4-.5

    simply put..
dont waste ur time with a factory casting..
unless u got a set already for free then i would give them to a machine shop to have them worked for a couple hundred...
if their roller heads u would need to change out the cam, lifters, push rods and distributor gear .....if you havent bought them i would invest in aftermarket cast from world products or aluminum for twice as much flow..:D

What's a roller head? He's starting with 78 pedestal heads with 69cc chambers and looking into E7s (also pedestal rockers) with same valve size a little better shape to the 64cc combustion chambers. Like I said about a .5 bump to your CR.

First off, if you don't need to change the cam, lifters, pushrods, or dizzy gear unless you want to run a roller cam. Secondly while I am a big fan of aftermarket heads, I do not like their price tag and can get good E7s for around $100 a pair. I am pretty sure thats a factor in THE78II's decision to consider these heads.

i was trying to make it short and sweet..sorry (early for me, and in a rush)
what i meant was if these heads came off of a 302 with roller rockers
and u wanted to use them, u need to ....

about the heads making horse power stock? it is so minimal to the rear
wheels its not worth ur time unless u had a machine shop open them up a little..you know shaving, grinding, to help it breathe better
for about $300-400...if u bought or buying them for say 200..then why wouldnt u save a little more for aftermarket iron.. or even a little more for aluminum..and dont forget the $100 for gaskets..

thanks for catching that like u guys always do..:hail2:

I'm running 1.7 roller rockers with stock length push rods no problem.

    Sorry, I got here late.

    I run ported E6's (from the 1986 EFI engines) on a dual-quad 5.0 H.O., and my father-in-law runs stock E7's on an '88 5.0 H.O. in his '56 Ford with an Eddy 1406 carb.

E7's are great heads for the money. The E6's sucked until I hogged them out -- the exhausts were the size of peanut shells when I got them. Now they're pretty decent.

You should be able to pick up a good set of E7's for $100, GT-40's for around $300-400, and E6's should be free. :nice:

I ran an 84 Mustang with a 91 roller cam long block, a Bronco two barrel intake and an Autolite carb of a Jeep 360 for about six years as a daily driver. It had tons of torque those heads matched up well to a big two barrel.
