Gas Q: bumped timing to 14

OK, i bumped my timing to 14... lets say i put regular in my tank and my car starts "pinging" what damage is that doing and what is exactly making the nosie? i only ask cause i'm nervous if i'm ever stuck with out enough $$ to super in i wanna make sure it's safe to put regular in. let me know guys.. btw, @ what degree can i advacne my timing and safley run 87 octane... Thanx in advance..

On a NA engine a little pinging will not hurt much unless it is constant. If you are not racing the car then I would just retard the timing to 8-10 and run regular. The difference between 10 and 14 degrees of timing is about 6-10rwhp.
