GT500 Spoiler & "Gurney flap"

I installed the DG Custom GT500 spoiler last week & installation was pretty easy. The hardest part was separating the gooey mastic holding the original teeney-weenie spoiler on to the decklid. I used a metal putty knife--not a credit card as a sticky had suggested.
Incidentally, the DG piece is very high quality, comes painted and it is fastened with 4-bolts, just like the original AND free shipping. From California to RI--that's a good feature. Great price, too.
I know who Dan Gurney is and his Ford GT success at LeMans, but what is the point of the "Gurney flap?" It seems to be nothing more than a relief molded into center of the GT500 spoiler, but it is certainly not a moving piece. I've looked through some Mustang magazines but can't find a photo or an explanation of why this is included or what its purpose might be. And in one tiny photo the flap seems to be painted black.
Any ideas?

The flap's not painted. It's just a strip of plastic, and the Gurney one only comes on w/ the SVT Package. The standard GT500 just has the flat strip.
