Hey guys, just wondering how you go about priming an oil pump? I am about to install a new one while I am changing my oil pan gasket and want to know how its done for when I start the engine. I am guessing once the motor is put back together and before I stab the dizzy I pour the oil in and do it, but what do I do. From what I've read you use a drill and an extension and a 1/4" socket I think and you spin it counter clockwise for a few minutes, but what is it that you spin? Is it down the dizzy hole that you put the extension? And what exactly will I be looking for? When Installing the pump I dont have to do anything but just bolt it on and put the pan back on correct? I also got a new oil pump shaft, should I change that or just leave the stock one?
You can get a drill adapter. Its just a long rod, the end depends what type you need. (Any auto parts store should have one) On my old car, you just put it down the distributor hole and ran the pump a bit with it. On these, i am guessing its done the same way. I was taught, it was to fill the hydraulic lifters, more then anything else.
hmm, well I read you can run use an pneumatic wrench, can I just use my air wrench with a long extension and a socket on the end of it? I can sacrifice a socket an extension by welding the socket on so it wont fall if needed. I dont want to go buying new tools if I dont need to. Is that it? Just put the socket on the pump through the dizzy hole and run it for a little? Can you guys confirm its counter-clockwise?

i just used a 1/4 drive 1/4 hex socket on an extension in my drill, run it backwards for a few minutes till oil flows up to the rockers, and done. its not just to fill the lifters, but also to charge the "lines" and prelube the valve train so they dont run dry on startup.
Sounds like the exact same thing I would do. I have even used a speeder handle to turn the extension with. It works good, but you may get tired real quick if you don't get much exercise... speeder handle...
Why order one? Just go to your local Autozone and rent one. You pay a deposit, use the tool, take it back, and get your deposit back. Won't cost you anything but gas money to get there and back.
Thats the Rod you showed at Summit. If you can rent one, I would. You can save shipping if you have an auto parts store near you. Welding one together can work, in the past, i have seen some like that at the track. I personally would Never trust a socket down there, if i didnt loose it twice, i would be suprised, hehe Plus i never had any luck with those pincher/claw parts getter thingys
I work at Advance auto parts, been there three years and never seen anything like that. I'll check tomorrow but I dont think we have one, definitely dont have one for rent.
