As many of you know my car has been down since April of 2005 and as such I haven't done any racing. Recently a few guys I know started going SCCA Solo2 racing. I knew a few guys that have been doing it for a few years, but it never really interested me. I mean the thought of going around a parking lot avoiding cones didn't seem like much fun. Well, two weeks ago Troy (yeahloh95) went with his SVO and told me about how much fun it was and talked me into going. A few things came up and he wasn't able to make it so I tagged along in my wife's Mr2 Spyder with a few of the local import power hitters. Here's the cars I went with: (Troy can add more to what they have done as he is better friends with them than I am) -Suby STi with a front mount, full exhaust, numerous bolt-ons est 350+hp -Evo MR with a HKS turbo kit upgrade and more. est. 400+hp -Evo with a Gt35R turbo upgrade, numerous bolt-ons est 400+hp -Nissan Skyline GTR est 400hp On the way there I kept telling these guys not to laugh at me if I sucked because I'm a staight line racer, not a brake and turn one. It was all I could do to keep up with them on the way to the race, I mean I was easily 200hp down from the next closest car as mine makes 138HP at the crank. When we got there I asked them if my car's tongue was still hanging out from trying to keep up. So I get to the line and I start trembling like a leaf, I hadn't felt like this in a long time and it made me realize how much I liked racing. I asked my buddy Mike to go with me for the first two runs to give me some pointers and show me the lay out of the track. It was nearly a mile long course and NOTHING like I had expected. The thing was HUGE! I was hitting approx 60mph on the back stretch! I thought it'd be this little parking lot race between a few cones, boy was i wrong. It was still a race between cones but it definitely wasn't small. I took the first run easy and clicked off a 81.36 second run. the second and third run I was off coarse due to missing a gate (I know I'm a newbie!). The fourth run was clean but I pushed it too hard and tried to power through the coarse and ran a 78.563. On the last run I decided to try a little easier and tighter approach and it paid off with a 74.971, which had a PAX index of 60.951. Here's how the rest of the guys did: Sti- 77.323 PAX time of 65.183 Skyline- 77.072 PAX time of 67.900 Evo with GT35R- 76.752 PAX time of 64.855 Evo with HKS turbo kit- 75.450 PAX time of 63.755 For more results go here, I'm car 128: http://www.scca-cpr.org/Files/archives/2006Results/2006FallEvent4.htm Out of 10 competitors in street tire novice (STN) I ended up taking 2nd place and the Evo with the HKS kit took 3rd. Needless to say I was shocked at how well the little go-cart went. I don't know if it was beginners luck, the MR2's power to weight ratio, or my superb driving ability (yeah right!) but I couldn't believe I did as well as I did. I was also shocked at how much I liked this, or should I say LOVED this. This is defintiely more fun than drag racing and it has me re-thinking my plans for the car now. My '95 will never be much of a contender for this type of racing due to its big weight, small brakes, and lack of handeling suspension mods, but I'm defintiely going again when I get it on the road. Here's the only pics I was able to take. The only car not pictured is the EVO with the Gt35R turbo.
BLASPHEMOUS!! j/k Glad to hear you had fun doing that. I've thought about it getting into that for a couple years now but i never made the push to do it. Congrats on the second place win!
yeah i wish i could have gone the gf was more inportant maybe we can find some more before the end of the year ,the svo is all ready to take on the mr. lol
ProKiller- By all means do it if you can. I'm not sure how far east you live but we raced in Phillipsburg near interstate 80. Troy, I checked and it seems the Cumberland races are done too for the year. I was even more shocked at the difference in my times to theirs when looking at the PAX times. Is that an accurate way to measure on car against another? i know its supposed to be a method of eually comparing cars, but does anyone actually use it? Does the Skyline have anything done to it?
yeah thats how you get compared with other cars is with the pax time "i think" i am really going to need to step up the svo and my driving skills to be competitive in esp there are some fast cars in that class .
if i was doing it though, i wouldn't be able to afford all the suspension parts now for the stang. too much work to get that setup, prolly just buy another car and start from scratch on that. I did think about trying to find a mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 though and yeah phillipsburg is a little too far for me. something like 4 hours if i'm thinking of the right place.
i did it last year, its a ton of fun! i was so shaky after my 1st run i could barely reach out and grab my time slip. the solo event i did was held on a shift cart track and times went from mid-high 50's to 70's fastest car of the day being a track only miata followed by a SRT4 with suspension and tires/rims i did this when my car was mostly stock (only had a cobra intake and was still auto) and i was getting the same tiems as a new mach-1
A bunch of local guys go to auto-x once a month. I havn't had to the motivation to get up at 6:30am and drive 1.5 hours to the event. But we're having a local event in a couple weeks that I plan on taking my Mazda3 to. That one's going to be at an airport so it should be a pretty good size track.
Mike, my buddy has a bone stock Mazda 3 that he uses and he said that make great track cars, especially on a really tight course. He said he finished 1 sec behind a 2000 Cobra R with it. Now I know there are a lot of factors that go into comparing those numbers but my point is he has done really good with a bone stock Mazda 3.
On another note, I have always wanted to do that sort of racing, just never got to it. I have watch a few times but thats it. I just don't feel I would ever do good with the stang, even with the suspension kit and everything. I think I would have better luck in a stiff, tight, good handling four banger. They seem to be the ones that win all the time!
i thought of maybe trying the time trials in the northeast iron series. http://geocities.com/northeastiron/ this is more road racing. there's a memebr here in the 5.0 forum by the screen name blown5.0 his name is Al. he drives a white LX in the series. i hope to make atleast one event next season, now i'll end up dumping more cash into the stang. go figure.
You mean you looked at your scores? I went just to plow over some cones. The videos are shaky, but you get the idea. You can really tell I had out grown my stock stall and had stock suspension. Our course was smaller, held it in 1st the second and third run. http://www.100mphclub.com/movies/gcom_auto-x.mov http://www.100mphclub.com/movies/gcom_auto-x2.mov http://www.100mphclub.com/movies/gcom_auto-x3.mov I never knew how hard it was to get my car to do a 180* with hot tires. I kept trying to get the arse to break loose, but the stall just wouldn't give enough. If only the would have let me keep my bottle in the car. Definatley had a blast though! ATE the living crap out of the edge of my street tires. We have heavy cars...
What the heck, might as well waste some bandwidth... http://www.100mphclub.com/movies/auto-x_excite.mov Here is a bunch of spill from a course we went and watched.
Sweet! They do handle really good, and I've just about worn out my stock tires after 24,000 miles testing that
Dude that's impressive! to say the least good job man... not bad pics I'm a bit surprised you didn't let the wife take the car out for a rip though? I am certain you were afraid she's put you to shame?
i always thought of taking the probe and see how it does... it would of sure put the stang to shame... im finally getting used to driving a rwd car...
