It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... a refrigerator-sized chunk of ice?

Could be a GM conspiracy?

A Hillsborough County resident's Ford Mustang was destroyed by just that Sunday, when a large slab of ice fell from the clear Florida sky directly onto the automobile, WTVT reports.

An anonymous neighbor of the resident who's now down a car told the local FOX affiliate that there was whooshing sound around 9 a.m. EST. Just moments later, the car was crushed by ice.

No injuries were reported, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating.

Federal Aviation Administration and local airport officials told WTVT they are unsure if a plane can be faulted for the incident.

This latest incident comes less than two weeks ago something similar happened in Philadelphia.
A chunk of ice believed to have come from a passing airliner fell through the roof of home in the Pennsylvania suburb. No one was injured, but a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were home at the time. The FAA is currently investigating that incident.

thats gotta suck!

do airplanes just dump water in flight?

Only on transoceanic flights...but sometimes mistakes are made. We've all heard about poop being dropped through peoples roofs all the time.

Of course, not all ice from planes is dumped. Sometimes ice build-up can form and then break away. Usually it's small chunks though. I don't know about that effect dropping refrigerators to earth

I couldn't have been that large but anything of a decent size would do quite a bit of damage.

How it happens:

Lavatories are filled, usually with 5 but up to 10 gallons, of "fluid". This fluid is a 50/50 mix of deodorizer and water. It is why the water is blue. On occasion the tank will begin to leak, usually from the discharge fitting used for dumping the tank after a flight lands. Tis fitting is about 6 inches in diameter. Since it is so cold at altitude it will freeze as it leaks until the chuck gets large enough to break away. If the tank is a 10 gallon size you could see why an ice chunk could get pretty large.

Another is the potable water tank but since the fill and dump fittings are a lot smaller those really don't cause a larger chunk of ice the way the lav would.
